I'd recommend ER6i purely on the basis of comfort. They sound great too if your dad's going to listen to any music.

I don't want to be limited to speech only! Sometimes on Friday at work a little Linkin Park or more extreme music is called for. Working in a machine shop isolation is key for hearing verbal content or, in music, maintaining the silent passages.
