Hey!!

I'd be grateful for any suggestions for a speaker/soundsystem to use on my iMac! It's an Intel Core 2 Duo iMac! Looks aren't too important but great sound quality is important!

Maximum is around £150 but would prefer to spend under £100! Will go above if the system is worth it!!

Cheers

Why would speakers sound/handle different on a Mac? Same question for the C2D.

I have the Audioengine 5 and absolutely love them. There's now an AudioEngine 2 designed for computers and is US$199 - within your budget.
Check out

They list resellers in the UK, too, on the website

Take a look at the first system on this thread, I have no idea if the products are available in Europe but I'm sure that equivalent ones are.

You could apply that logic to any brand.

I believe his point was that saying he had a Mac changes nothing about his question or the answers he'd get.

That's a point several have made, and I agree.

My point is that mentioning he had a Mac doesn't make him pretentious. Certainly fanboys of any brand can mention their brand pretentiously, but he did not.

I don't think we'd even be having this discussion if he had asked what speakers to buy for his new Dell.

That's why I said pre-built.

OK, I think we've wasted enough time arguing semantics.

At least the OP did get some good suggestions.

To the OP,

You really ought to jump on the Behringers, they will give you some very sweet sound all by themselves.

Add the cheapie Yamaha sub and you will be set to vibrate the house.

I like the fact that the OP mentioned which computer he has because it does alter which system is recommended to him. Imagine if someone suggested that he buy a 5.1 system and weren't aware that the OP has a imac which don't come with a optical digital port. The OP might act on the recommendation and buy the 5.1 system only to find out that now he has to also buy an add on surround sound card to make the 5.1 work properly. So, I think people ought to be encouraged to specify as much about their existing system when posting questions.

When SQ is the goal, go for the best two speakers you can get. Money spent in speakers generally gets a greater improvement per dinar than any other improvement you can make.

The amp and the speaker are one in powered monitors, which gives the manufacturer a chance to tweak the sound just so.

If you really want best SQ from your monitors, get the low bass out of them and send it to a sub.

(on edit)

Even the little StudioPro 3 speakers will get quite loud and stay clear if you get the low bass out. The bass is where most of the energy to reproduce music goes.
