Sansa Clip + .

If it sounds as good as this little 2gb Clip I have here.. then I second that.

It sounds absurdly good with my ES3X, considering the IEMs cost like 30 times as much as the player. Madness

I had the opportunity to hear an HM-801 at this summer's New Jersey meet - powering my L3000's, no less

plenty of power to drive the leatherheads, with detail and sweetness to spare

this is precisely why I ended up preordering one

Kenwood HDD-based players are also very good.
And ipod 5g just sucks when listening through headphone out. I don't know, maybe switching to a line-out (+amp) and imodding the ipod will help, but you should specify that.

If you don't care about money I give you the final recommend, which are called "four magic": sony d50, iMOD, kenwood d9, B&O 2 as ufo in common. They have the best sound as MP3 player, and their prices are also fantastic haha
