Getting korean LG v50 over v30 from China, v30 served well for 1-2 years, but i want faster 5G internet speeds and better camera, plus keep the quad DAC too and such B-) v60 would be nice, but i am not willing to pay that price when lg v50 refurbished is 3 times cheaper in great condition too

Hi all,

Just got stolen Fiio BTR5, for 4 months served me prety well, the sound was way cleaner, a bit more emphasized on higher tones, combined with AKG K240 MK2 studio headphones. Way better sound than integrated phone SD630 DAC.

I am wondering is it better to buy again Fiio or refurbished LG G8X or V50 for only 20-30 $ more? Now I use ASUS Zenfone 4 which is serving me well as a phone, and those LG phones are better. Is the sound of LG phones comparable to BTR5, it is a dedicated DAC after all. Are refurbished phones reliable?

Headphones are AKG 55 ohm, and earphones Sony MH950 16 ohm bought from Kanoya, nothing heavy.

What do you guys suggest?

I love my G8x. Same ESS 9218p DAC but with an optimized battery discharging.

Sound quality (signature) is similar.

While the LGs have more power single ended (with your AKGs ~125 mW on HIM), the BTR5 has 2 times the power in balanced setup (untill 240 mW).

It's obvious, that the LGs lasts way longer when listening to music alone (at least 3 to 4 times w/o much screen on time).

But to me, the BTR5 is more convenient for my listening habits.

It's up to you which headphone do you use the most, I'd say. ;)

Would add to comments made by @Chris Kaoss and @Vass66: I have been using the LG V30 for 2 years now and battery life is still fantastic. Regularly listen to Tidal and Qobuz through UAPP. Even with my Beyerdynamic 880 Pros plugged in on high impedance mode, you get plenty of simultaneous screen time (for hours) before needing to recharge the battery. And considering the Quad DAC inside the LG fully decodes Tidal MQA files (in-line with the fact the V30 is a 4-year old flagship phone - which is old in terms of today's advancement in technologically) is pretty remarkable.

You may want to consider other variables such as DAC dongles (if you use these): some of my IEMs sound better with my Zorloo Ztella and/or Dragonfly through UAPP; however, this causes the battery to deplete quicker than listening through the V30's headphone jack. Still can't complain though as the LG V-series still fully decodes MQA files if TIDAL Masters is something you prioritise.

Tidal MQA will work on V50 with UAPP
Can anyone confirm if there is a noticeable step-up in sound quality going from the LG V30 to the V50/60/G8? Would appreciate people's opinions.

As per https://www.androidauthority.com/lg-quad-dac-1115577/
V30 is tuned by Bang & Olufsen, while G7, G8, G8x, V50 are tuned by Meridian. Both companies are already legendary with their audio products.
I don't have V30 but I doubt there is a significant step up in sound quality, so no urgent upgrade is necessary, imho.

I went from V20 >> G6 >> G8.

The V20 had B&O on the back. G6 no major afiliation, but the V30 generation, and G8 is Mearidian affiliation.

There was a subtle but steady increase in quality. The largest being between V20 >> G6. Whether this had anything to do with B&O I have no idea.

B&O used to be a great R&D centre in Denmark. However their main strengths were in robust reliable design and unfatiquing sound. They had decades of accoustic knowledge and a huge annechoic chamber to do research in: none of which is of any use to a phone's headphone output. Meridian were closer to the cutting edge of audio DSP design and DAC implementation, which is more useful when they are asked to "breath" on a phone.

B&O cleared out a huge amount of the old guard of engineers a decade ago. Hundreds of man-years of experience, gone forever. The new hired idiot in charge told me to my face, that all B&O had was a brand name. So wrong a mind-set. Now B&O is mostly a bunch of ex-Philips engineers in Singapore shouting at Chinese factories to make shiney cheap bluetooth electronics they can charge a lot for. The stuff designed in Denmark is still pretty good though.
