OK. We've had best scotch, rootbeer, beer. So how about rum? Just because you're on a diet doesn't mean you can't look at the menu.

Being from Venezuela, I do know of and have tasted a few world class rums. Venezuela besides crude oil and beautiful women has premium rum that is regarded as among the very best in the world.

"Ron Santa Teresa 1796" is one of them, and another one is "Ron Pampero Aniversario", famous for its smooth leather bag. "Diplomatico" and "Cacique Milenium" are some other top contenders. These rums have won several top awards at international rum festivals and contests:

Another common major winner is from Guatemala, "Ron Zacapa Centenario" (but I'm biased, so started with the Venezuelan ones

).

Google those rums out! Those should be well known by any rum connoisseur.

PS. No Bacardi is at the level of those, not even their "select" or their "8 años".

For sipping, I was into Havana Club 7 year old (Anejo 7). Hmmm. But that was overseas, no luck here in the embargoed US.

I had some Jamaican rum once ,a gift, that was almost as black as the bottle it came in.What it was called i have no idea but it went down well

took the bottle on the annual "knucklheads on the water so hide the wimmin and kids" overnight campout and canoe trip.Thirty guys, fifteen canoes, not pretty...........

three of us sat around the fire and slammed the bottle-two made it to their sleeping bags, one slept "in place" and was REAL surprised when morning came and he realised where he was

Ron de Barrilito 3 Star from Puerto Rico is my favorite. It's a dark rum.

My friend brings back some really tasty stuff from Guatemala every now and then. Can't remember the name but it comes in a white woven wicker holder.

I've only had the odd sip of Captain Morgan, but I've always heard that a rum hangover is a pretty intense experience. where does rum really stand on the hangover scale?

I think it's different for everyone. Gin is the worst for me, with Tequila a close second. I don't drink Gin, but Tequila slips by every once in awhile.
