Best RPG's for ps2?

Oct 5, 2004 at 1:56 AM Post #2 of 16
Xenosaga is excellent, but realize that it's the first installment of a massive 6-part epic that will span multiple generations of consoles. Ep. II is due out early next year.

Disgaea and Phantom Brave are strategy RPGs, but are amazing games - definitely among the funniest I've ever played. Others? Kingdom Hearts is an action RPG that anybody can probably enjoy, the .hack games are love-it-or-hate-it (it's a "simulated" MMORPG), Suikoden III is supposedly excellent (I own it but have yet to play it), Skies of Arcadia (the DC version was pretty good).

And, of course, the PS2 is backwards compatible with the PS, which will go down in history as the best platform for RPGs ever (though helped by all the re-releases of SFC/SNES titles).

Suikoden III is a bit bland but my favorite thing about the game is that the controls are designed so that you can play the game with either hand. I can lay on the floor with my head propped up on wither arm and play the game with the other. It's ingenious.

I had a blast with Disgaea. It looks a bit limited but my brother and I put in something like 130+ hours into it (or was it 180+?) The last boss was ridiculously hard to beat, but it was a fun if a bit mind numbing time getting ready for it.

I wish they would remake chrono trigger and ff7.

I'm actually playing star ocean 3 right now, I think it's very good. Don't really play much games in general, though.

A couple good ones were just released:

Star Ocean: Till the End of Time
Shadow Hearts: Covenant (darker than your standard RPG, just up my alley)

Digital Devil Saga is another dark RPG coming out in a couple months or so...and if you like strategy RPGs, the Disgaea/Phantom Brave/La Pucelle group of games are all winners (Disgaea, IMO, being the best of the three).

I sometimes judge games by their music as well...Shadow Hearts Covenant has one of my favorite soundtracks out there. Star Ocean TtEoT has a decent soundtrack but not as good as Sakuraba's (the composer) Star Ocean 2 or Valkyrie Profile scores.

I would not recommend Final Fantasy X-2, its horrible IMO.

thats too bad about X-2. FFx is one of my all time favorites- not for technologically awesome layout or progression, but storyline and awesome FMV sequences.

It might seem a little old school with the PS2 and all, but what about the other Final Fantasy games? I have FFX (loved it) and FFX-2 (disliked it, haven't played much) and the three PSX Final Fantasys (not including remakes). FFVII, FFVIII, and FFIX are all good in their own way.

Shadow Hearts: Covenant just came out, and from what I gather, it's absolutely brilliant.

Link to reviews...

edit: woops, didn't read the thread closely enough

Well, if graphics aren't an issue, I suggest you pick up some PS1 rpgs:

Xenogears - Awesome RPG with great music, a little bit on the difficult side though ( took me about 75 hours the first time through ).

Chrono Cross - I actually liked this one more than the original ( Chrono Trigger ).

Vagrant Story - Ok, not really a RPG, but still good none the less

.

FF VII-IX, of course.

There are some more excellent RPGs (suikoden II, lunar silver story complete, wild arms, etc ) but the ones I listed are my personal favorites.

while i appreciate the ps1 reccs, i think i own nearly every significant ps1 rpg (including the rare Valkyrie Profile)

i've been really dissapointed in rpgs for the ps2 so that's why i was lookin for reccomendations.

personal favorites on ps1: lunar 2 eternal blue, valkryie profile, tale of destiny 2, arc the lad collection, ff beginnings/chronicles/anthology/7/9/tactics

Once Fayt stops whining about violating the Prime Directive (yeah, I know it's called something else, but it's basically the same thing), Star Ocean 3 is pretty good. I liked Xenosaga, though like already mentioned, it's only part 1 of a big series, so don't get it if you need a firm plot resolution. Also, if you don't already have it on Dreamcast, definitely get the Grandia II port. It doesn't look as good graphically early in the game, thanks mainly to the poor job coding textures for the PS2 port, but everything else about the game is truly awesome and I recommend it to everyone!

I really enjoyed FFX also. FFX-2 was a waste of time. I never got into Xenosaga, but I keep wanting to finish it up. Kingdom Hearts was quite enjoyable for me. It was fairly easy to beat, but I liked the graphics and storyline.

I must be one of the very few who didn't care for FFX... even though I am (used to be?) a die-hard FF fan, that game simply annoyed the hell out of me. I found the characters to be annoying and clichéd (nevermind the voice acting), the plot to be uninteresting, and the side quests to be absolutely, mind-boggling dull and irritating. I've owned the game since the day it was released (shipped early in Dec. 2001), but it wasn't until this past summer when I finally finished it - the game simply didn't draw me in the way past installments (and Xenosaga Ep. I) did.

I played the Suikoden III and the first Shadow Hearts for PS2 and both were very good.

Right now though, I've borrowed my friends XBox and I'm sorry to say, but: It's all about Fable
