Again, there are so many superb, brilliant musicians on the list its virtually impossible to choose. If I had to though, I would choose Carl Palmer for sheer technique and his matchless skill, Keith Moon for his passion and barely restrained violence when playing, Bill Bruford for being not only an incredible drummer, but because I once, many years ago, met and partied with he and Tony Levin, and Neil Peart since he is such an incredible anchor for Rush, as well as the only drummer on this list that is a Head-Fi member!

on a sidenote:

not the best drummer by a long stretch, but probably the best drumming songwriter and singer has to be grant hart (see signature)

are there any other drumming frontmen (apart from phil "disney" collins)? i don't mean drummers as drummers, but drummers as singers/composers.

Mhhh.. wheres Portnoy? His drumming is connected to the songs like none other, and his pure technical skills are way beyond just "great"

Anyway, I voted for Neil Peart because he's got the groove ,)

The drummers listed here are all very good. When it comes to the best 'Rock and Roll' drummer, I think of the man that lived and breathed the 'Rock and Roll' lifestyle. This man had great speed, good chops, and could play with the total abandonment that great 'Rock and Roll' demands.

Keith Moon wins hands down.

Another vote for Keith Moon. Levon Helm may have been better in terms of timing, pace, rockability, and the like but Keith had the ability to hit you hard with raw nerve and that's what rock drumming is all about.

Incidentally, I liked several of Levon's solo albulms but oddly enough they tended not to be drum intensive - very mellow in fact. It was more his voice, lyrics, and ability to sing in a story telling fashion that kept me buying more of them.... more albulms that I'll have to replace with CD's some day - it's been so long that I can't even remember the names of them.

I voted for Neil Pert Because I think he is the best most consistant. The best drumming I have ever heard though is Lars Ulrich on Fight Fire With Fire off of Ride the Lightning. Let it be known however...

I HATE METALLICA!!!

I do have to give credit where credit is due.

Neil Pert is Still the man!
