I'm surprised by that response! Really, I don't even think of Moby Dick as being one of the best DRUM solos of all time, let alone best rock instrumental. While I totally respect your opinions, do you not think that a 'rock instrumental' must contain at least more than one instrument for most of the time?

Another one that gets my vote is:

Frank Zappa's "Shut Up N Play Yer' Guitar", "The Son of Shut Up N Play Yer' Guitar", and "The Return of the Son of Shut Up N Play Yer' Guitar"

^ Some of the most amazing guitar solos I've ever heard - from any genre!

Oh, and "Dream" by John McLaughlin's "Mahavishnu Orchestra", though considering their complex improvision, maybe they're more jazz than rock? Or does fusion count as rock?
