Well, the HD800 can sound rather un-engaging if you use a flat-sounding source and/or amplifier. It can work with rock I suppose but I rather use the HE-5 or HF2 for that genre.

Speaking of the HE-5, how is it for rock?

I agree to most part except I find clarity more important for pop. So ED 8 is pop as in lady Gaga and Rihanna but PRaT, attack, drums, no treble roll off etc make me biased to the 900 for rock.

Got to love those Ultrasones you can recommend them for almost anything

Thanks for the suggestion, but K701/2 were some of the most sterile, boring headphones I've EVER heard IMO. I heard them through a Canamp and just couldn't stand the sound. They weren't musical at all, and I just couldn't get involved with them.

Besides, from what I understand, the T1s trump the K701/2 in every category excluding soundstage width, which I found to be overexaggerated on K701 anyways, while being far more musical and involving.

As for the RS-1s, I just got my HF-2s today and I absolutely love them. They'll definitely be my short period listening headphones, but I need something for my 5+ hour sessions as I just can't stand bowls for over an hour or two.

I am enjoying the d7000 but I am excited to mod them to the LA7000 lites. I think they have so much potential. I really like my RS1i but they are only for certain ocasions and arent great for long listening sessions. People have suggested the ps1000 but if they are anything like the gs1000, you may not be happy. I was really unimpressed when i heard them. The totally lost that grado sound and their imaging was so unnatural.

I am not sure what to recommend to you as it sounds like you are very unhappy with the comfort of the grados. If the LA7000 is able to live up to its name, i think we should both be in for a treat.

D7000. It does everything well. I'm very impressed.

Very good, it gets the ambiance down perfectly. The only problem I've had with the HE-5 is the rather harsh upper midrange which makes it very fatiguing for extended use.

If you want upfront but a few rows back sound and more comfort than Grados you need to lower your budget to AKG Sextetts, they are incredible for rock. If they sold new today with the 6 bass reflex drivers they'de probably retail at $1500.

This begs the question as to whether or not the top rated IEMs are being considered as a viable alternative to the top rated full-size headphones.

Seems to be the case if you forget soundstage and comfort perhaps

As far as Headphile is concerned, Larry does very good work. It is art, not science. He says that right up front. I am happy with the AKG K-340 he "Headphiled" for me. I think people can suffer from unrealistic expectations when something is customized. The bagel pads are worth a try and low risk.

Before you give up on Grado you may want to try the Senn HD414 pads on your HF-2. $10 shipped. I put them on my Grado RS2i and they are now very confortable. I wear them for hours at a time.

Speaking of Audio-Technicas, what does everyone think of ATs in general for rock?

I hear the W5000 and W1000X are completely different beasts, so one of them could be decent for rock. I know the L3000 are good for rock, but that price tag! If I could afford L3000s or R10s, oh how joyful I would be.
