Best opening to a song?

Sweet Child of Mine - Guns 'n Roses
...that intensely "sweet" guitar arpeggiation

Also,
Also Sprach Tharathustra - Richard Strauss
...not because of its over(mis)use, but because of its actual greatness

And how about the opening to the last act of Die Walkure by Wagner?

NEW ORDER'S "Blue Monday!" the original and still the best! who else can come up with the most famous and recognizable beat while testing out a new drum machine. when someone hears those few opening beats, there's no doubt it's "Blue Monday."

Metallica's "One" has a much cooler intro than "For Whom the Bell Tolls". And "Fade to Black"s intro is great.

All time fav(my favorite band too) has to be "My Name is Mud" - Primus. Of course those intros are very short and I love them all...

"One Hundred Years" by The Cure has a great opening line: "it doesn't matter if we all die..." how morbid. and the last line to that particular album (Pornagraphy) ends in: "i must fight this sickness... find a Cure!" Robert Smith at his best.

"Hallowed be thy Name" by Iron Maiden has a killer opening. so does Megadeth's "Hanger 18."

Peter Hook's opening bass line for Joy Division's "Transmission" is unmistakable. so is the opening guitar riff of Ride's "Drive Blind."

that's all i can think of right now...

and got every one of my thoughts alread, here's one more for classical:

Toccata & Fugue in D Minor - J. S. Bach.

...added benefit: it was written for bassheads. Make that amp draw current; induce a voltage drop in the neighborhood. "Turn up the volume rip off the knobs."

You're right. And what about The best known intro of all?

Beethoven's 5th Simphony!!!

There are so many tunes with great openings, but a few jump out right away:

Sonic Youth - Teenage Riot
Dinosaur Jr. - The Lung, The Wagon
My Bloody Valentine - Soon
Stooges-TV Eye
Fugazi-Waiting Room (Yes I've heard it a million times, but it's classic), Arpeggiator
