The question I had in mind was what is the best opening of any song you have ever heard? I just came home from a buddy’s house, and we were jamming to Orgy's Blue Monday, which has a killer opening. What other songs do you believe have an opening to die for?

Good one. Mine:

Rage Against the Machine - Calm Like a Bomb. 13 second bass solo. The song Wake Up also has a good intro, really sets a tone for the song.

Falconer - Stand in Veneration. Not many metal songs start a capella. Even fewer can pull it off.

Spin Doctors - Refrigerator Car. Can anyone tell me what time signature this song starts in? It sounds like 17/16 played as 4/4. Regular measures with an extra note thrown in between. Rhythm test.

Hard to argue with that one. I've heard an "homage" to this opening at least three times (Tangerine Dream, Shy People soundtrack; Klaus Schulze, Body Love Vol. 2, "Nowhere, Now Here"; Transatlantic or OSI, forget the track). When I become a big famous rock star, I'm going to do my own homage to it, except it'll be different.

Others:

Rush, "Limelight" (I love the way the guitar starts in a completely different rhythm than the rest of the song...or is that "Tom Sawyer"?)

Ozzy, "Mr. Crowley"

Rage Against the Machine - Maria

White Stripes - Seven Nation Army

and BY FAR:

Pink Floyd - Shine on you Crazy Diamond pt. 1 (the crazy 7-minute intro)

Holly Cole --Temptation

Sara K -- No Cover

My apologies I thought I was in the What are you listening to now thread.

To keep on track one of the songs on the Holly Cole CD is
Invitation to the Blues by Tom Waits. It is very easy to visuallize:

Well she's up against the register with an apron and a spatula,
Yesterday's deliveries, tickets for the bachelors
She's a moving violation from her conk down to her shoes,
Well, it's just an invitation to the blues

The morning coffee is kicking in and my mind is once again clear or as clear as it gets. I thought of a couple more from the past that are worth a listen.

From 1972 Foghat -- "I Just Want To Make Love To You"

Ted Nugent -- "Cat Scratch Fever"

New Radicals' Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too album, "Mother We Just Can't Get Enough". Opening line...

Anyone who has heard it knows what I mean.
