Oh, I see.

Unfortunately, he will not be able to find anything particularly noteworthy in sound quality in that style of phone at any price. In other words, he might as well go with the new stock iPod earbuds and get it done with.

Sennheiser px 100 or px 200, alot of people had trouble with the 200's as they didn't make a good enough seal on the ear I however don't have that problem and I love them plus they fold and have a nice case.

Heh well disregard that. Yeah you are pretty much SOL when it comes to earbuds.

Or . . . E888. It's actually pretty good you know -- if you haven't heard it, you can't say that all earbuds are crap and that he's SOL.

Used EX90s... They do come up for sale once in a while. I sold mine for 33USD to a UK Head-Fi'er because it had some aesthetic issues on one of the earphones. They were otherwise in very good condition. Hang around, and you'll find a good deal.

I'm used to fairly good headphones, so the EX90 sounded a bit muddy in the bass and the mids. The highs were ok. I wouldn't pay the full UK retail price (60GBP/$120) for them, which of course I did originally with high hopes. I took a major loss when I sold them on, but I didn't really care because to me, the sound was worth about $50-60. See if you can get a used pair for $50. I doubt you'd get better deals unless I decide to buy a pair, mangle it up a bit and then decide to sell it off again

I must say the build quality is very good. The earphones themselves remind me of B&O.

Actually, I have heard the E888. To my ears it isn't worth the much higher price over even Sony's own $10 pair of earbuds.

And yes, I meant to say that there is nothing in the conventional earbud world which delivers outstanding sound quality. But that does not mean that all earbuds sound crappy; in fact, quite a few brands and models of earbuds sound decent.

For a bud, the Cerulean XLR from iSkin is pretty decent and you could always get a pair of Belkin Ear Jams to put on them if you want more in-ear action.

I do not like IEMs, so for regular phones I'd suggest Koss PortaPro, Pro35a or KTXPro1, or Senn PX100. All of these can be easily had for well under $50.
