Hi fidelity,
it seems that the Sandisk updated the Sansa Clip+ with the Clip Zip.
Would that be the better choice?

It's the same sound with a bigger colour screen, there's rockbox support also for Zip. (you will need rockbox to run your FLAC codec)

It's entirely up to you which you choose, if you want the larger colour screen for a little more $ go for it.

I would really love to have that album heart! :D However I've been taking a look at both players on Amazon since waiting for your response just then. Apparently a lot of consumers are saying that the Clip Zip shuts down abruptly and haven't been able to turn on. Would this be a battery issue or a firmware issue (rockbox would fix that right?)?

also how do i benefit from installing the rockbox firmware? (never really heard of it until today)

Well, that's the first I've heard of the Zip shutting down here, no-one seems to mention it (maybe because they don't won't too) Though I wouldn't count out the possibility's.I don't know if rockbox will cure it either. Installing rockbox gives you many flexible options such as EQ and the ability to play FLAC on the Sansa players mostly. It actually offers way to much for me to explain, others swear it makes the player sound better too, but that is debatable.

I think if you want the album art go for the Zip and install rockbox. I don't think that problem you read about is a major concern. We'd know about it here.

Okay, last question haha.

How does the build quality compare to the new ipod shuffle (another worthy candidate in my opinion)? I'm hoping that it can last beyond 2 years at least? :| I am a heavy user.

@skamp would installing rockbox void the warranty of the product?

Newegg is selling the Sansa Fuze refurbished for 32 bucks. 8gb. If you are into album art this will be good for you in that regard due to the screen. I was thinking of trying one for that price.

I have the clip+ andthe clip zip and the zip also displays album art on it's tiny screen even with rockbox installed.

Yes it will void you warranty...... IF YOU TELL THEM you have installed it. Rockbox is easy to remove.

It is durable mainly because it is light as hell. If you drop it, it wont even hit the ground because it is not even heavy enough to pull the IEM's out of your ears. It also has a very sturdy built in clip on the back.

Considering you can find a clip for 30 bucks and a 32gb card for 18 dollars. 48 bucks for a 36gb player aint a bad deal! Sure beats the shuffle.

You don't need to install Rockbox on the Clip+/Clip Zip in order to play FLAC (though I recommend it), the original firmwares support it out of the box. Also, you can dual boot both firmwares.

Really? by gosh I never knew it supported FLAC on stock firmware! All this time!

It show does.... I have to use rockbox either way cuz my files are all ALAC. But that will change soon cuz apple just released ALAC as open source under apache license about a week ago :D

I think what I was confused with was ipods not supporting FLAC unless rockboxed. "I think"

The black SD card is priced at $25 and the red and grey SD card is priced at $38. Will there be a difference if I opt for the more expensive device?

I didnt even look but there will be no difference. The player works fine with class 4 speed thats all it needs. The only diff u will notice is possibly when loading songs with a faster speed.

Get 64gb!

Haha!

If I were to purchase a 64gig card, that card would cost me $80. :p That could purchase two of the clip zips in case one broke.
