Best Modern Shoegazing

Verve: Verve E.P. and A Storm in Heaven. You GOTTA hear the track "She's a Superstar," it's on the first one.

Ambulance LTD: Very good band, they show lots of different influences and I'm not sure if they're completely shoegaze but I think you'll enjoy. The rhythms are almost jazzy.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club: B.R.M.C.. One of my favorite albums, they show definite shoegaze influences. Very dark and moody with noisy guitars.

OH yeh, forgot about BRMC 1st album is very good......definitely JAMC influenced

Which brings us back full circle to the group that spawned the shoegaze genre Jesus and Mary Chain besides thier excellent first two albums in the 1980's (Psychocandy, Darklands) they have some great work from the 1990's as well that many don't own:
-Honey's Dead 1992
-Munki 1998 (features guest Hope Sandoval from MAZZY STAR)
Don't hear much about these but they are very good and must have for any shoegaze fan.

They had albums between those two "stoned and dethroned + automatic" but mostly slow ballad type songs I don't really like too much.
Also don't forget two great JAMC collections of non album tracks:
-Barbed Wire Kisses 1988
-Sound of Speed 1993

i also second DA's and djgustashaw's recommendations on early Verve. The Verve EP and A Storm in Heaven are absolutely some of the most mesmerizing music of all time.

i also second DA's and djgustashaw's recommendations on the first BRMC album. definately has a lot of JAMC influences, but also has enough variation within the songs, with noisy rockers like "Love Burns" and "Whatever Happened to My Rock 'N' Roll" to droney dirges like "As Sure as the Sun" and "Rifles." the second album seems to lack that variation.

besides Psychocandy, Honey's Dead is JAMC's masterpiece, which features the best examples of noise mixed with dance beats. it also boasts the best opening line ("I wanna die like Jesus Christ") since The Cure's Pornagraphy ("It doesn't matter if we all die").

My Vitriol is one of the best newer bands out there. their mix between layered shoegaze and an uncompromising rock attitude sounds fresh and energetic. Finelines is definately worthy to pick up. i've heard that their second album is near completion.

The Doves' first album Lost Souls also has some shoegazing elements, although not a apparant as other bands out there. the album is ethereal and melodic, with strong hints of Radiohead and The Verve.

Swervedriver is a band i havn't seen mentioned in a long time. i agree with DA that Raise is a shoegaze must have. it's swirling and noisy, but harder edged than many other early shoegaze bands. Mezcal Head has a stronger set of songs, although it loses some of Raise's textures. "Duel" and "Last Train to Satansville" are classics.

Lush's Spooky... "Nothing Natural," "Covert," and "Superblast!" alone are worth the price of admission.

Catherine Wheel's Ferment and Chrome are classics as well... as DA has mentioned. along with Ride's "Nowhere," MBV's "Loveless," and Slowdive's "Souvlaki," there are shoegaze must haves.

Hum: Downward is Heavenward and You'd prefer and Astronaut

Have you heard Centaur? That's Matt Talbot's new band. They put out one album called IN STREAMS. Definately track it down if you don't have it. it's similar to Hum, lots of the same thick guitar riffs, but the arrangements are more simple, and the overall effect is more subtle. Hard to describe really. Pick it up I say. Great stuff.

And I've really only started to come to this conclusion in the past few years, but man I think DOWNWARD is just one of the best albums of the 90's. Definately in my top 10.

No I havnt heard of Centaur... I will have to check em out, thanks for the tip Masonjar.
Just read what AMG had to say in the bio and discography. Some pretty big words: "...Downward Is Heavenward isn't merely the group's best album, but a lost classic of '90s rock, period." "...as Downward Is Heavenward is one of the most darkly romantic and timeless albums ever created"

Ckecked the official soundtrack credits and besides several of well known genre classics they have Kevin Sheilds listed as artist, formerly of My Bloody Valentine. He is active with other bands now most recently on newest Curve album and also with new Primal Scream

Here's one I just got today: Mellowdrone- A Demonstration of Intellectual Property. It's dark and moody rock that shows influences to other artists such as Jeff Buckley and Ours. But there's something a little bit more electronic and sonically dense about it that made me think shoegazing. It's just a six track EP, they haven't put out a full album yet. And it comes on an awesome clear CD!

I'd say it's definitely worth the $3.97 on alldirect for you shoegazing fans.

hmm, i hear the ambulance ltd's 'ambulance ltd' lp is copy protected.

is this true? i have no way of checking it out locally so buying it from an overseas retailer is my only way. i would hate to go through all that trouble just to find out that i cant rip and encode it.

I only saw this FILM 2 weeks ago and did rewind the very end numerous times for the wonderful 'Just Like Honey' - The Jesus & Mary Chain. (The scene itself was pretty good too).

Yeah, I could see myself rewinding the movie '9 songs' a lot but I don't think it'll be for the excellent music there (just kidding, haven't seen it yet). Speaking of BRMC, Awake is my favorite song of theirs currently.
