I tried the HD800 yesterday, and it's absolutely amazing for classic music and I was so fortunate to buy it for US$ 540. I'm overall very pleased, particularly for large orchestral pieces, it is on a different tier than other headphones. I should point that for the price, the AKG K7XX is an awesome headphone for classic. I'm now reading about the SDR mod, though I don't feel that it is needed for classic music as it is for another genres
Your preference is very important here.
AKG K702's sound is lighter and more expansive while AKG K712's sound is more full bodied and relaxed in the upper midrange.
I really enjoyed my Beyerdynamic DT1990 for classical and film scores. Ive recently tried the Hifiman Arya, but they're quite out of budget fkr both of us(for now).
I would also consider the Sennheiser 660S, despite not being a sennheiser fan, i was surprised with their ability to distinguish detail in violins for various albums i had, that being said i did find the DT1990 better in every way than the 660S.
One fault the DT1990 have is that they require an amp, i wouldn't recommend using them on a mobile device or desktop solution with a proper amp to drive them. The 660S can be pushed by a phone, dap, laptop or PCs internal sound card.

I would love to own/hear a Stax or the Focal Utopia for classical music. For now i'm using a B&W P9 Signature and i'm in absolute awe of it's sound, makes listening to classical music a rather personal experience. Audio Quest Nighthawk would be my next best choice for the genre but imo doesn't come close to the level of sound quality achievable of the P9 Signature.
Great picks, but I must say, after comparing my L500 to my HD 800, I preferred the HD 800. Although at first listen, the stax has more wow factor, after a while the slightly V shaped sound combined with the almost complete absence of sub bass made certain instruments, particularly violas seem boomy. This along with the much inferior soundstage makes them a worse pick in my books.
I would say Focal products could be a contender here if we're talking about musicality. There's also Meze products which also emphasize on warmth, highs, and natural sounding music.
