The former leaks sound in and out, so others around you will hear your music, and you will hear their noise (the benefit being generally better sound quality). The latter keeps your sound in, and their sound out, to varying degrees, depending on the design.

open: the back of the headphone has holes in it, this usually sounds better but provides no isolation (you can hear outside sounds and people outside can hear your music)
closed: not open. Some isolation (you can hear outside noises but people can't usually hear what you're listening to unless you're listening too loudly).

I just purchased both the KSC75 and HD201 for under $30 from Amazon!
With free shipping, what a deal.

Both are very good headphones. I like the KSC75 a bit better right now, but will hold judgement until both are broken in.

KSC75 unless you need isolation.

I have both HD201 and KSC75 and IMO the Koss is the runaway winner.. having said that, you can't go wrong with either..

Fashion wise, the Koss doesn't ruffle or mess up your hairdo..
