From what I've read, alienware is overpriced.  He is lazy and too dumb to buy parts and assemble a gaming PC for himself though
 
My question is, what is the best gaming PC you can get for 3,000 or less
 
 
 
Update:  he ended up buying it unfortunately.  way too much $ for a pc IMO
 
anyway, Im thinking about building one soon and wondering if anyone had recommendations on a $1,000 build

Find a good computer store with good prices and have them build a custom computer, I'm guessing they could do it for under $2000 or even $1500.

What PurpleAngel said. Even in my small village there's a PC store that can custom build a PC for customers. You can get the same specs (or even more current components, like a newer graphics card) for about half the price.

As other said, you can get a great gaming pc with under 2000$, if he need help with the config just ask, i used to do hardware assembling for a living, so just tell me if you need help

You can get a rig that can kickass on everything for less than 2 grand so drop the extra grand into a pair of LCD-2s.

$3,000? That's quite a lot of computer for your money, and you can certainly do better than Alienware.
 
Heck, I bet you could do better with just $2,000 and put the $1,000 savings toward an awesome headphone system, this being Head-Fi and all.

3K? Wow. My rig, which is about 10 months old (I got it for Battlefield 3), consists of:
 
i5 2500K
4GB DDR3 1666 RAM
Coolermaster HAF-12 case
Seagate Momentus XT 500GB hybrid hard drive
Asrock P67 Extreme mainboard
2x Radeon HD 6950, modded to 6970, in crossfire
Nvidia GeForce GT440 (for Physx only)
Microsoft Sidewinder X6 keyboard
Saitek R.A.T. 7 mouse
 
I paid about 2000USD for that rig back in the day, and it runs Battlefield, Metro 2033, Crysis 2 (with the DX11 high texture mods) and everything else I throw at it at the highest settings at 1920x1200. Most games run at 60fps; no game dips under 30fps apart from Mafia II where I do have to tone down the Physx to medium.
 
I recently upgraded the keyboard to a Thermaltake Cherry MX red keyboard and added a Corsair Force 3 240GB SSD and even then with the upgrades the rig still comes in at under USD2,300.
 
I'm guessing this rig should cost 2/3 to 1/2 what I paid today, and you can still run games at full-bore for the near future - at least, until Battlefield 4 comes out, heh.
 
I assembled it myself, although assembling a computer is very easy. I helped my brother in law to order and assemble his over the phone, and he lives halfway around the world. A quick youtube search and you should be able to find a nice guide to help your brother along the way. Just set aside about two hours for the first build - your brother might even learn something valuable along the way.
 
Having said all that, what games does he play / plan to play? If it's World of Warcraft, then anything over USD600 is overkill.

ALWAYS build your gaming PC.  I could build a PC that would make the Alienware bow down as its b*tch and it would cost me around $2,000.  AND I could toss in a GTX 690 (a graphics card that costs 1,000 by itself)

Computers are like legos.  You should have no problem building one.  You could build a nice higher end Intel system for under 2000 dollars.

Dude for 3,000 dollars you can buy a pretty great computer. I would recommend  building it yourself but there's always plenty of people that can do it for you.

with 1100 euros i got a pc(2500k + gtx 670) that runes bf3 maxed at 65 constant fps online, gta4 at 60, sc2 at 90, skyrim at 80,counter strike source at 300, all on 1080p

Alota companies build pcs for a premium nowadays if you can't do so yourself, it'll still definitely be cheaper than buying them premade from dell/alienware/hp etc.

Yup, Cyber Power PC being one of them.  Of course that only applies to American customers as far as I'm concerned.
