I'd recommend an AMD graphics card simply because they are cheaper and can outperform the Nvidia ones.

The 7970 is comparable to the 680 yet it is cheaper than the 670, huge difference!

The 670 FTW operates close to the 680 (sometimes beating it (Signature 2?) ) for the same price as the 7970.

Have they fixed the 7900 series issues with 13.1 or 13.2 ?  I heard they were.

If you're talking about the Crossfire issues, I heard that a prototype driver that's supposed to be released within 6-10 weeks fixes those issues.

Crossfire?

I only run a single monitor on 1080p, even my 6850 dishes out ample performance. For reference the 6850 is more like a 5790,  halfway between 5770 and 5850 in benchmarks.

On fire sales Newegg has the 7970 for $220 after rebate, that is an incredible deal.  Honestly with that kind of card I'd get an Intel system, the AMD CPU's still lag behind in terms of single core performace.
