If you have mulit-core computer it will use all your cores at the same time and the speed increase is real nice. So paying a little for that performance is acceptable to me.

I use Lame + audacity.

I would just use FLAC frontend (downloadable from the FLAC website) to convert them back into wav, the use LAME + Exact Audio Copy to compress them to MP3.

Thats just me though.

find and download lame 3.97 or similar version, find and download foobar2000.
open flac files in foobar2000, highlight them, right click and choose "convert to", choose mp3, change mp3 quality to v0(or any bitrate of your taste), click ok. foobar2000 will ask you where the lame.exe is located, browse and show where it is saved. then foobar2k will ask where to save the output files (mp3s), choose your output folder. voila~
