Best DAC for 400$

I would recommend the bifrost. Made in usa and five year warranty on a great dac,

Yulong D100 (slightly above budget) - my vote for one of the best dacs under $500. 
 
Also quite good is the Gamma2

I will be watching this thread as I have almost the exact same question. Looking to either get a dac and an amp, or a combo, for around $500 total. I have pretty much narrowed it down dac-wise to the Bifrost, the Cambridge Audio DAC100, and now the Emotiva XDA-2 (thanks for the suggestion Preproman). For a bit more money I can get the Cambridge Audio unit with a built in amp, I think they call it the Plus with the amp. The others I am going to have to buy a separate amp for. So far I am kind of leaning toward the Cambridge Audio unit but I'll keep an eye on here and see what people think.

Never anything Maverick.  I had the D1 and it was the biggest piece of unmitigated crap I've ever purchased.
 
On the other hand, the Musical Fidelity V-DAC II is an excellent DAC for the price.  I performs above its price point, IMHO.

I have the Audio GD NFB 3.32. For 350 + shipping.
I think its pretty good for the price.
