Best Component CD player?

Aug 13, 2001 at 6:14 AM Post #61 of 80
Darn it... I really want an optical out. Otherwise, what's the point in getting a component CDP? A portable with optical out (J&R have one for ~70!) would be just as useful for MD, and could probably sound better with a CAL gamma....maybe I'll just get a portable CDP with digital out......

Oh, here we go again....

vij, have you checked ebay, etc. lately?

Redwood: Thanx for the list - very helpful. But are any of those CDPs really much better as transports than PCDPs? I NEED TO KNOW! lol....

I am proud of this thread......

How do I know?

I've never heard a single one of these. Sorry.
But maybe somebody else here has. It's really not audiophile material (maybe stereophile class F
wink.gif
), but as we've seen on page one, even a cheap player can sound pretty decent.

What about the JVC?
It looks pretty good (well, the V700 look pretty good, too
wink.gif
)
and you were looking for a JVC in the first place, right?

I didn't want a JVC coming in. I wanted a Denon 370.....on uBid.

There was one in particular, chych knows about this one, that was going for like $29. And I had no money - birthday too far off, etc., etc.

In the end......it looks I'm gonna get a "cheap" (for U, maybe!) CD player (like the TEAC or JVC), and couple it with the CAL Gamma.

Later on I upgrade, to maybe an SACD player....

Patience, Dr. Watson, patience.

You could still get a good deal on uBid, ebay, etc.

BTW: 100$US is is a lot of money to me, I even have a hard time spending 10$ unless I know it's absolutely necessary (food and stuff
wink.gif
)

But I always say: students have more time than money.
Use your time to save the money that you don't have!

(ie use your time to lurk around auctions, classifieds, etc and
find yourself a real bargain)

Yes, patience....must resist urge to get portable cd player with digital out. Component is better........I CAN RESIST!!!

meh....sorry about that.

does ANYONE have ANY experience with ANY of the sub-$100 component cd players out there? I mean, If I can get the Denon, I'll be happy.....but I need to be realistic. If I don't find one on an auction or something, I need a "fall-back."

wab: The JVC is overpriced out here......this is ridiculous. I mean, that machine would be MINE if it was $50 less.....and at that price, it would a reasonable deal, too. I wonder why the price is so inflated.....

I recently purchased a used, 12 year old Luxman CD player from E-Bay and it sounds better than my portable Sony D-303 and D707. I'm certain it will win a durablility contest against any portable as well.

I'm so happy with it that I have just "won" a 10 year old Luxman CD player, which has a digital out, for $60. Haven't received it yet.

If you are thinking temporary anyway, used is the way to go. If I were to sell either of these units in the next year or two....providing they still work OK....I'm certain I'll get 100% or even more of my money back out of them.

mbriant: In a year or two, or maybe a few months? lol, j/k

I guess I'm gonna go for a PCDP.....unless I find a decent transport.....under $100...

Are those two Graphic EQ's on the front or is that the reflection of the CD's inside? If they're EQ's I'd buy it just for that.

"does a transport need to be good?"

Alot of people think so, but I don't know from personal experience. Has something to do with adding jitter to the signal, which as I'm sure you know, is NOT what you want.

i used my "high end" sony discman (d777) for a long time as my home player too. then i upgraded to a sony cdp ce535, which has a "hybrid" dac that smooths out the rough edges left by 16 bit wordlengths. i am much happier using the the 535, and my cds sound MUCH better than they did just using the portable.

Technics is the "high end" Panasonics...sorta like Sony ES, but not really (much lower price point)

sorry, i haven't had any experience with megachangers
