I'd recommend the DT231, but they're not particularly good at damping (though they do dampen somewhat).

The HD-201 is really good for $20. It's the best sealed headphone I've heard under $50.

I like the HD201 better than the DT231, HD280, and HD25-SP. I don't think I like it quite as much as the HD25-1 overall, but sometimes I do reach for the HD201 rather than the HD25-1.

Really, the HD201 is pretty terrific. Don't feel you need to spend your whole $50 to get a good headphone.

How much sound leakage is there? It's hard to believe you can buy a decent pair of closed cans for $20.

HD201's sound leakage to the outside is negligible to none. At least with my music at my volume. I think to bother others it would have to be cranked up beyond all reason.

Isolation from outside sounds is somewhat modest, but enough to be helpful. Much, much more than PX200, about equal to DT231, less than either HD25, and a good bit less than the HD280.

Beware of the DT231 if leakage is important to you. It looks closed, and provides some isolation to the listener, but leaks quite a bit to the outside world. It did not pass the "spouse sitting on the same couch trying to read her book" test, not by a long shot. Quite audible to her from across the room, in fact.

Yes, it is. But it's true. The HD201 makes me feel pretty sick about the money I've sunk into stuff like the DT231 and the HD25-SP. It even makes me feel queasy about the HD280 and HD25-1. The HD25-1 is better than the HD201, but is it $180 better? Probably not for me: I probably wouldn't pay the extra cash for the HD25 if I had had the chance to hear it and the HD201 side by side before acquiring either.

Ditto everything episiarch just said. There are two caveats with the HD201, however. First of all, it's very midrange-forward, so if you like a more laid-back sound, this may not be for you. Second, it's not very efficient. I've been comparing this and a number of other inexpensive closed headphones lately, and this is by far the least efficient of them all. It will run your iPod's battery dry pretty quickly.

Another thing about closed headphones is how they fit when the pillow pushes up against the back of your head. I hate it when I lay down and the pillow ends up pushing the headphones too far forward on my head. For this reason, the PX200 is my go-to can for bed listening. It's a nice bonus that it fits me perfectly; I wouldn't recommend buying them without trying them first, however.

HD201 sounds more like the HD555 than the PX100's. Yep, it's that good.

Once word gets around about these things, everyone is going to sell their R-10's.

I will recommend DT231 with no hesitation.
The only caveat is that it needs to be properly driven.

Where can I find real life pictures of the HD 201?

Episiarch, are the HD 201's earcups thinner than the HD 25-1's? Do the earcups have a bigger diameter, i.e. are they a bother hanging around the neck? How would you rate its overall portability in contrast to the HD 25-1? Thanks in advance.
