The sound is detailed and rich and super warm with very rounded bass. It can sound too juicy and bass heavy depends on where you are using it, but that can be a good thing for the rather flat iPod 5G. For a desktop CDP I will pick Mundorf SIO first, but to add flavor to the iPod video, the Cardas might be a better choice.

and like the Mundorf, the Cardas is huge and super expensive, cost even more than the SIO

interesting...I plan on fabricating my own case for my next dock as the next size up in hammond cases from the one i'm using for my teflon dock is HUGE. I want to be able to fit 2 x Mundorf SGIO in and this cardas sounds interesting, maybe consider it, but i'm in love with mundorf and I can get them at reasonable prices locally; better than buying OS. if I use SGIO the resulting dock with actually be smaller overall, as likely I will have no need for bypass caps.

I wonder if anyone has tried Sanyo POSCAP for audio, tantalum/polymer. They're small and not too expensive. I think they even could be soldered to the board instead of the regular tantalums.

Sanyo SVP solid electrolytic is also very small and cheaper than POSCAP. I think I'll have to try them.

Yeah... it's hard to find a case at a good size.

Mind if I ask why you want to use coupling caps on it at all? Most of the players I've opened up already have smd coupling caps inside of them so you don't really need them in whatever you are connecting the player to.

There's a lot of DC at the DAC output. A coupling cap is really needed.

The mod thing is to remove the original tantalum caps and replace them with something better, like BlackGate NX HiQ.

yeah at least with hammond, most seem to be roughly the same proprtions, so if I want to just have slightly more height, I have to get a case that is also the same proportion longer and wider

of course I could just shell out for dueland silver foil caps and use something quite compact

hehe have you guys actually seen the prices on supposedly 'the worlds best cap' they do sound like they would be amazing. but google it and have a look at their prices for silver foil signal caps
eek.gif
someone jokingly recommended them to me tonight and I remembered seeing pics of them and thinking they would be great if they were good, so I looked them up seriously thinking of getting them and OMG!!! for a cap at the right rating for the DIYMOD of the silver foil model, you are looking at nearly $3000USD each!!!. i'm actually considering the copper foil ones though; at about $250 each and replacing my TFTF VCAP dock with a small thin and wicked dock that can be as thin as the ipod and about te same size too.

NO they wouldnt; most places that sell caps also list the size, but regardless, no they wont even close to fit. besides .47uf is about 10 times too small in value. you need at least 4uf generally to enable use with a wide variety of amps. many amps have an input impedance of 25K or 50k; for 25K 2.2uf wouldnt be enough and would need at least 3.3uf, with closer to 4uf being ideal. with a 50k pot you could get by with 2.2uf at a minimum

yeah OK; so I like to over design things

hehe. I have the calc in excel, but yeah I like to have a margin for all docks. I tend to use 4.7uf for everything. or at least if i'm using a bypass I have it combine to around 4uf or just under, so will at minimum use 3.3uf with a .47uf bypass; but preferrably 4.7uf with .47uf bypass. especially with VCAPs as the 4.7uf is the same size as 3.3uf and only costs a few bucks more

Can't you just saw a over sized Hammond aluminum case shorter, then install the end panel....

with VSF and such, you will be paying for the smaller size. And those are supposedly designed for speakers. Anyway, please write us a long review if you do end up using it

nah not so; theres 2 different types of caps from dueland (2 of each construction type) they make a crossover and signal type of each one. and then they have the regular radial type; the VSF and then there's the highest priced one, which is cast solid and looks like a copper or silver hockey puck. so i'm looking at the copper foil type in either the radial or VSF, thinking the VSF though. they are about the same price as the radial/can type copper foil. the VSF is about $250 and the radial type is closer to 450 each for a 2.2-3.3uf (so similarly priced in that they are both in the hundreds and not thousands LOL). the silver signal type of both is about 2500-3000 each
eek.gif
the signal type is called VSF DC and goes as high as 2.2uf which is just about perfect for a DOCK if you add some small teflon bypass caps. could actually get away with 2.2uf with my lisa III anyway. but I think i'll try them out with my gamma1 in 1uf first. we'll see.

Duelund VSF DC 400v 2.2 uf copper foil signal capacitor - duelund vsf 400v copper foil capacitors - signal capacitors - capacitors or

Now I'm using Sanyo SVP 82 uF instead of BG NX Hi-Q 47 uF. First impression is that they're cleaner, not as grainy. Placebo? Burn-in and long time listening will hopefully speak the truth.
