I am looking for the best (not just punchy) bass (also some control) headphones in all of the company offerings listed. The only thing I ask for is no amp required... This is a time for fellow bass-heads to unite.

You are mentioning bass head and no Beyerdynamics. The probably best bass can is the dt770/80 for the price.

Darth Beyers, BUT you would have to stretch your wallet a few hundred dollars more...so i suggest trying the DT770/80s
as alphaproject mentioned

Looking at your budget and the need of not using an amp, I guess your best bet is getting some Ultrasones, probably Pro2500 or HFI-780.
Don't know if Beyer 770 can do well without an amp, but would be another interesting thing to try, or their beefed up version Darths.

Denons, at least D5000 won't work well without an amp. The same goes for high-end Senns but the HD-25.
JVC DX-1000 sound well unamped from a computer, but they're beyond your budget. Great cans for bassheads. Tons of bass but quite right.

Grados work very well unamped, but they're about midbass slam and rhythmic drive, not deep bass for a basshead IMHO.

From the cans I have... PRO2500 > Edition 9 > HD650 > GS1000, the others are not worth mentioning.

PRO2500 has the most bass. Edition 9 has a little less of bass but of better quality, tighter and more controlled, but seems less deep due to a narrower soundstage. Both are full and very present.

I use my GS1000 with small bowls and I guess that's the bassiest grado I have heard. The bass of grados sound different. It's spatial.

Never tried DT770 nor D5000/D2000. But I can't imagine them having better bass quantity and quality than the Edition 9/PRO2500.

It's kind of subjective as to what headphone has the "best" bass.

The tried and true of bassheads seems to be a pair of Darth Beyers. However, I've never listened to a pair, so I can't necessarily say. Also, you're looking for a 'phone that can be good unamped.

I guess I would lean toward the D2000 myself, as it was an incredibly humbling headphone to listen to organ music.

Good luck.

What did you end up with?
They didn't exist when this thread was started, but for great basshead phones that don't need an amp, Audio Technica es10's have got to be on the list. Those 53mm drivers slap, and they are lively enough to be great with rock as well as hiphop. New pairs on ebay go for < 300, and paired with a fiio btr5, they are perfect portables. Probably my second most used cans.

Everyone's idea of best is going to differ. So many different characteristics that go into making a great bottom end. If you want straight man bass with really good traits, you should check out the Apos Audio Caspian headphones.

For me the bass from D9200 is the most gratifying...
