Best and Worst Remake of Song:
Jul 14, 2004 at 11:01 PM Post #46 of 194
I personally think that anyone attempting to remake Gary Wright's "Dream Weaver" should be shot.

I was listening at work one day and actually heard some female singing it. I can't remember who she was, but it was utterly "forgetable" and unforgivable. I almost wet myself from laughing so hard.

I mean, comon...can anyone ever associate that song with any other artist?

Best for me would be Gary Jules' cover of the Tears for Fears song "Mad World" that appeared on the Donnie Darko soundtrack. The original I believe was too fast, the tempo too high for the subject matter, and Gary Jules' interpretation suited the lyrics much better.

I've got a few other of my favorite remakes some have been mentioned most haven't:

Guns and Roses - Knocking on Heavens Door
Aerosmith - Come Together (can't believe nobody has mentioned it yet)
Queen - Crazy Little Thing Called Love
Van Halen - You Really Got Me
George Thorogood - One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer
John Lennon - Stand By Me
Marilyn Manson - Sweet Dreams
Ray Charles - Eleanor Rigby
Van Halen - Dancing In The Street
Guns and Roses - Mama Kin

My nominees for worst:
Sammy Hagar - Sitting on the Dock of the Bay
Hootie and the Blowfish - Hey Hey What Can I Do (Led Zeppelin song)
Van Halen - Pretty Woman
Elton John - Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds

I don't know about best, but all the songs on Mandy Moore's Coverage album were well done.

Alien Ant Farm's Smooth Criminal was pretty cool...
Dynamite Hack's Boy's-N-the Hood was pretty funny...

William Hung's She Bangs definately gets top honors for Worst Remake

Personal favorite cover songs of mine in no particular order:
The Boo Radleys - "There She Goes"
Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Higher Ground"
Jimi Hendrix - "All Along The Watchtower"
Pearl Jam - "Last Kiss"
Pet Shop Boys - "Always On My Mind" and "Where the Streets Have No Name"
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes - "Brown Eyed Girl"
Smashing Pumpkins - "Landslide"

The absolute worst cover I ever heard would probably be Avril Lavigne's live cover of System of a Down's "Chop Suey." It sounds like a cat slowly being crushed to a bloody pulp, except that the cat happens to forget the words halfway into the song.

I think this was the top vote getter on the other threads--excellent choice!

LOL!! It is indeed a bit of a stretch. But check out his Mozart, or above all, his Chopin Third Sonata!!

I especially hate covers that lamely try to copy the originals in every detail. I think Elton John invented this stupid genre with his lamo cover of "Lucy in the Sky"--I'd prefer Shatner's version.

He is quite a character

of course, I love his Goldberg variations. How idiosyncratic (and in a good or bad way) do you find his Mozart?

Type O Negative's cover of Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl" is nothing short of awesome. The extended depression mix that appreared on a few EP's is even better than the October Rust version.

Yeah, his Bach is great. At the time he recorded the Mozart, he was saying he didn't like Mozart! The playing might be taken as his demonstration of why not--idiosyncratic in a bad way. The Chopin is bizarre.
His Scriabin, on the other hand, is much "too slow", but is very interesting. Idiosyncratic in a good way!

He didn't like Beethoven much either! Can't remember where I read it, but he especially disliked the Hammerklavier and Appassionata sonatas...

I think that one has to really love (or at least respect, or like) the music to play it well!

Admittedly, I have not heard any Scriabin, so I wouldn't be able to tell whats canon and whats out there

I'm not sure I'd really say the *BEST* ever... but Three Dog Night was a GREAT band that basically made their name doing covers of songs:

One
Joy to the World
Never Been To Spain
Mama Told Me Not to Come
Old Fashioned Love Song
Eli's Coming
Liar

They didn't write a one of those themselves.
