Let's see...the winner is easy. The runner-up is a bit harder.

Winner:
Tool-"Lateralus"

Runner-Up:
Immolation-"Unholy Cult"

The second half of the decade was actually pretty lame, but the first half was awesome.

So is Lateralus winning because everyone immediately thought of it upon looking at thread title or because it has been prominently listed at the top of the list for a while now?

I know if I hadn't seen so many suggestions for it I might not have considered it my favorite but all the votes for it along with the fact that it is damn near perfect makes it impossible to deny it first place in my own head. I further justify my decision by the fact that it is one of those albums I can always put on regardless of mood. Definitely a go-to album for me.

Tool - Lateralus
Agalloch - The Mantle

Runner-ups:

Iron Maiden - Brave New World
Disillusion - Back to Times of Splendor
Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
Dream Theater - Octavarium
Exivious - Exivious
Seventh Wonder - Mercy Falls

Well I probably wouldn't have thought of it had I not seen it at the top, but I'm glad I saw it, because in my mind it's the best album of the decade.

a truly worthy head-fi list - once again showing the high regard many headphiles here have for refined metal. shame on pitchfork for ignoring the likes of tool, opeth, agalloch etc.

thanks to limpidglitch for keeping the thread in shape, much appreciated.

I just have to comment on the appearance of the Fleet Foxes in many of these posts. This is a minor band, to put it kindly. In five years, no one will remember them, and people currently touting them will deny that they ever did. The Foxes, in the mean time, will have gone on to law school or Wall Street.

Sterile, stilted competence -- that's the best I can say for them. See also Crosby, Stills and Nash, or maybe the Four Freshmen. That's not intended as a compliment.

This sort of pop music is what rock was supposed to demolish. I guess not.

See also: The Strokes, Grizzly Bear.

Welcome to hipster town,DrBenway. I'd also like to point out how severely limited the scope of the nominations are (can anyone say "Band without a guitar"?), theres a few, but it is the overwhelming majority.

I'm not disappointed with the winner, though
