Beats By Dre? Anything better for $350?

Sounds like "warm" treble to me! : )

However, the Beats are in a different class of headphones than the ones we kick around. They're high-end consumer grade. We listen to the more esoteric high end, stuff the average person knows nothing about. I think the Beyerdynamic rep was caught slightly off guard when I brought up the DT48. Nice guy; I asked him to tell corporate that there's a handful of us who love the DT48.

What I'm getting at is that the difference between the Beats and Head-Fi headphones is like the difference between buying a top shelf bottle of wine at the regular supermarket (which can be good, by the way) and going to a wine specialist who carries all the small wineries and has an intimate knowledge of Napa, the Willamette Valley, etc. Sometimes the specialist has wines that aren't well known but cost less than the top-shelf at the supermarket. Which would you rather drink? The one the bagger points at and says it's the best because it costs the most, or a less expensive one from the guy who can tell you about the climate and soil of where it's from, visits the winemaker occasionally and is friends with them?

The Beats are sure to appeal to a wide section of the public. But I don't like them at all. They're extremely bass heavy and sound unnatural. I would never buy them, even if they were $20. It's a mystery why Monster tossed them to the biggest headphone snobs around.

Again, I appreciate Monster's contribution to CanJam and I am willing to take their products seriously if they take this market seriously. The same goes for Bose; if they build a quality headphone (and they are certainly capable), I'll buy one and praise it. But the Beats are not for us.

Take a serious look at the headphones recommended to you. Forget the price difference. You'll get great headphones you'll love listening to. That's the only thing that matters.

I'll quote this as this is the truth.
This is, yes, we can justifiably bag Monster for their cables, but in terms of their audio products, there are pretty good.

The Turbines are praised here at Head-fi, almost to FOTM status and there isn't a 34 page appreciation thread (at time of writing) of them for nothing.

Also when you think about it, The Beats are ANC headphones and in terms of ANC headphones, they are some of the best out there for active noise cancelling. Of course remember that all ANC headphones are overpriced compared to their 'standard' non-ANC counterparts.

And the fact that there is no option to turn off ANC is another reason they get bashed.

In any case, someone brought up the Q40s earlier. Personally I think they have a decently recessed midrange and highs (Maybe a tad less recessed highs, but still recessed), and that's before you compare it to the bass. I would think that there would be a lot more people that hate them to tell you the truth (Then again they sound OK as long as you haven't listened to any... well MS1s or AD700s).

I'm starting to wonder what all that CEO guy listened to, one of the few people to be going around there with a wallet big enough to buy anything he liked enough (I don't think patrick82 was there...). Did anyone give him an eargasam while he was there?

I'm sorry, why the frack do you need a segway inside? That's just beyond lazy.

It was mentioned in another thread that the Segway was for medical reasons. But it sucked when the guy and his entourage entered the Headroom room, ignoring the signs and chattering away loudly, killing the quiet environment.

I would kill if they made a headphone based on the Sigma.

I was at Best Buy today, and I walked past someone looking very interested at these phones. I quickly said, "don't buy these, they are a ripoff". He then asked if I had any recomendations, and I told him the ATH-M50. They look similar, sound better, they're cheaper by quite a bit, and they probably isolate almost as well. He was very grateful, and I think I should work at an audio store

I also listened to these awesome skulcandy phones that had an "active subwoofer" inside the cups. There was an "amplifier" in the signal path, holding a AA battery i believe. The bass literally vibrated my whole body. It was nice to REALLY FEEL the bass from headphones, but it honestly hurt, and it was this thick dull thudding bass. unbelievable. I was blown away
