Average portable listening level?

On my Panasonic CT470 (9mW) i use my sony 88s at 2-3, 1 if it's silent. My grados on the same player get 4 and my senn HD580s get 5-6.

On my 30mW Sony SRF-40 walkman (thanks NEO!), I use my 888s at 0-.5, my grados at .5 - 1 and my senns at 2. Sometimes, in quiet areas, the 888s are too loud even at the lowest volume.

I used to listen with my CDP maxed out, even on my 888s. Then I realized how loud it was, (TOO LOUD), so now i listen at much lower volumes. I just hope I didn't hurt my hearing too bad.

BTW, that Sony walkman goes really loud. I think it could completely melt the voice coil in my 888s.

I realize that sometimes I'm listening way too loud. I just try and keep the volume level reasonable most of the time but sometimes I can't help it. I just need volume. Right now my hearings better than most peoples I kind of want to keep it that way.
btw, I heard somewhere that the 888's could be broken or blown up real easy. You say you got the volume maxed out and they sounded fine?

Voyager, I think maybe the 50mw power handling might be peak output, and the 9mw/ch on the Panasonic might not be peak. Therefore I wouldn't trust my earphones to the ratings on the package cause you never really know what they are measuring.

9mw's doesn't really play that loud so I guess it probably wouldn't hurt the 888's. The 15mw's on my Sony really makes a big difference. It has destroyed a few sets of headphones back in my careless days.

My Sony EX70's are rated for 100mw (i think thats what Neruda told me) and my Sony only puts out 15mw but it doesn't sound like I could get the ex70's much louder than the Sony will play them before they would blow up.

Hope this makes sense. Peace

Sharp 831/Kenwood L7R: No more than 16/30;

Panasonic 780 and MJ88: No more than 10/25.

Panasonic's 25-step volume control is often "too rough" for me - I preceive a somewhat larger "gap" between 3/25 and 4/25. This doesn't occur with 30-step volume controls (Sharp/Sony).

Well, if you want to know what the "nominal" power rating of the Sony MDR-E888LP's is, it's 20mW.

I listen at about level 4 on my iPod.

Why are there two of those "I did't here you" levels? Is one supposed to be 0-2 or something?

9-15 on my iRiver H120 (0-40) with Shure E2C. This kind of information in people's replies might be useful for comparisons, but the poll itself is pretty much useless

It is fairly simple to adjust ones answear to the scale given. However the two answears saying the same thing but one in capitals still confuses me as to which one might chose for which ocasion.
