I'm thinking of swapping out the stock oscillator of my Bel Canto DAC2 with the Audiocom Superclock 3.

Anyone have experiences with the Audiocom Superclock's in general?

Is the upgrade a subtle difference, or definitely noticeable?

And is Audiocom's dedicated PSU for the Superclock really necessary?

Darn.

DIYcable.com carries LClock X03 here in the USA.

But not available in 24.576MHz.

Edwood. I had Brice at Sound Odyssey put a superclock 3 in my level 3+ modded cd-25 by music hall. Unfortunately, I cannot comment on how the sound compares to the trichord4 or the LC03, but I can say that so far, I really like the sound of this player. From what some have said (Doug Jesse at RAM East) this clock is superior, and not by a little, to the other 2. I spent extra money to have SO put this clock in my cd-25 in lieu of the trichord4. I just went by what I read/heard from RAM East and others who have bought modded Toshibas from him. So, while I don't have a comparison, you have one person here who does have this clock, and who likes the sound (albeit coupled with many other things...zapfilter2, neverconnected ps, etc.).

I'm just wondering if changing the clock in my Bel Canto DAC2 is even remotely worthwhile.

I like that the LClock X03 is a nice complete package. It comes with a little wiring harness and all.
Hopefully the Superclock 3 has all that.

There is plenty of room inside the Bel Canto DAC2 for upgrades.

I think it's pretty important to have side by side comparisons with stock vs. modded to hear the real difference. Placebo effect is just too strong. Especially if you fork over $300 to change one little part. And that's just the cost of the part.

I suppose it would be easier to hope it's better and just not know for sure.

But there are enough Head-fier's in my city with stock Bel Canto DAC2's eagerly awaiting to see if they can possibly hear a difference.

Yep.

Going to mod the PSU first. It's the easiest to do.

Just wanting to hear of others experiences with Audiocom Superclock 3.

Hey, Lan. You went pretty far modding your Art DIO, right? Did you ever swap out the clock oscillator?

There's not THAT much you can do in there because of limited space. I don't believe there's any room for a clock upgrade. :/ and since i don't do case stuff, it's not going to a bigger case.

There is a decent amount of space in the Bel Canto DAC2. The PSU board is shorter than the DAC board.

I may actually have enough room to fit XLR outputs in the front panel. I'd probably have a custom one machined.

I had a LCAudio LClock XO3 installed in my teac player and it made a postive difference. The traces of sibilance I was hearing vanished and details that had previously been smeared are now evident. It was worth having it installed. Strangely the gain on my player was a lot higher when I received it back. I don't beleive the clock caused this though...

edit: the largest difference in my player came from having the analogue stage replaced (this mod was done first, the clock coming a lot later)

Biggie.

Hey edwood (loved that movie with johnny depp, BTW). Here's a shot of the interior of my sound odyssey cd-25 with level 3+ mods with the SC3. The SC3 is smaller than a credit card, and sits in the front of the unit, directly behind the display. So, in this shot, it's towards the top of the picture, just to the left of the transport with the yellow cd, with the big, looping copper-colored wire coming out of it. See if you can see it here:

A neverconnected power supply, on the extreme left-hand side of the unit in this pic, is powering the superclock 3. I have 140 hours burned-in on this player as of now...It sounds very good, but there's other stuff going on here (zapfilter2, neverconnected PS, c37 lacquer, lacquered wood chips, etc.).
