I have a pair of M40's and I was wondering if there is a guide out there about how to covert the 1/4in cable to a 1/8in without needing to use the adapter anymore so that I would be able to listen to music on my mp3 player.

You will need soldering iron, rosin core solder, 3.5 mm plug (1/8 inch) and some soldering skills. If you can solder I can help you
