Audio-Technica ATH-WP900

Here's my impressions:

1. MSR7B - flat, neutral, linear, bright. Not in any sense v-shaped. Bass is controlled and tight, but not in any sense elevated. Bass is not the star of the show. Again, they're bright headphones.
2. WP900 - v-shaped. Bass is also tight with no bleeds into mids, but I'd say there's an elevation of about 2.5db maybe in the bass region. Treble is similar to MSR7B. Mids are not necessarily recessed, but they're not front of stage as treble and bass are.
I guess this would make sense if the bass is elevated a few decibels.

If you are also interested in Denon, the D9200 is a great TOTL option in the closed-back market.
AD9200 have probably the best -quality quantity- bass I’ve ever heard
lol yeah been a big Denon/Fostex fan for a while right now and I'm still using my Denon AH-D2000. In the past I've owned TH-X00 Mahogany, TH-X00 Ebony, and E-Mu Teak (sold them all for various reasons and kept the AH-D2000 because as a whole I still like this the best).

I was eyeing the new Denon AH-D5200/AH-D7200/AH-D9200, was considering the AH-D5200 since it's the most balanced signature and falls closer to my budget. But I keep hearing amazing things about AH-D9200 (AH-D7200 I keep hearing it's treble shy, and I like my treble).

Even their promo video look amazing:
Denon 9200 - 1,600 dollars
AT WP900 - 650 dollars
🤔
Yes and if the wp 900 achieve an overall equivalent performance that is a real deal .. î’ll also make return impressions as soon as possible on that A/B comparison
Haha yeah mainly why I didn't go for the Denon AH-D9200, also I think I realized I listen to a lot of female vocal so I was intrigued by the Audio Technica line then eventually end up in this thread. So if the ATH-WP900 works out well that would be amazing. :stuck_out_tongue:

As Focal Elegia was mainly wondering if I should try something different just to explore (as oppose to Denon/Fostex), I'll see how this pans out haha.

EDIT: On a side note, I showed my wife the picture of Elegia and ATH-WP900 and she likes the ATH-WP900 better purely based on looks LOL.

I wouldn't expect the wp900 to hang with the 9200. At the end of the day, it really depends on what and how you want your headphones to perform and behave - alongside knowing what the headphones on your short list are capable of... Or at least having a good idea. It's mostly all subjective anyways, according to our tastes and preferences.

Female vocals are a forte of the new Audio-Technica headphones, IMO. If you're shopping within or close to the price range of the D9200, you should also consider the AWAS and, by extension, the AWKT.

I know, introducing more choices at this juncture will only muddle your thoughts; however, if you're going for a solid upgrade, it's prudent of you to consider the best options. :)

However, if you've decided between the Elegia and the WP900, I'll be happy to provide a 3-way comparison, along with the D2000, once I purchase the Audio-Technica.

Elegia reviews are quite mixed, with various people remarking on the lack of bass response, plus many comments about the build quality of the headband adjusters leaving marks from use. I'm a Focal Clear user, so I was quite disappointed in what I read about them, and one reason I went for the WP900.

lol I don't think I can go into the D9200/AWAS/AWKT tier yet, even Elegia is a little bit over budget.

However I will definitely looking forward to your 3-way comparison. Thank you again for doing this!

Oh yes I definitely remember reading about the low bass complaint. Though I thought it just utilize more in the sub bass range? Also how do you like your WP900 so far coming from Focal Clear?

I love the Clear and the WP900. The clarity (no pun intended) that's common to both is great. The Clear is used on my desk with my Oppo DAC/amp, and the WP900 with my Sony WM1A.
