I'm bidding on some audio technica ad 500's. Haven't found much on them. I can get them for 49 some odd bucks shipped. Not too much of a hit on the wallet. What I'm wondering is how are these headphones? Decent? Bassy or trebly or more balanced. Any info would be much appreciated. I know that the ad700's the bigger brother are praised a bit. Thank you.

From what I've read, they're almost the same as the AD700, except with slightly more bass and slightly less treble. They also have more impedance.

I think for entry level hifi headphone, you'll have some fun.

Might want to take a look at some reviews of the Grado SR60 though while you are at it.

Whomever told you that they are similar to the AD700 isn't being correct. The AD500 is a very low-fi phone, the clarity is not worth the 50 bucks. Save your money and get the SR60 instead.

I'm currently winning this auction. I have 3 days so I could still lose it. I have looked into grados but don't have anywhere to audition them close by I've heard that they could be tinny sounding. So I was gunshy on those. But I've heard that the koss ksc75's are like a mini grado. Like a gateway to the grado sound. If those are any indication of the grado sound then sign me up. How is the bass on grado's? tight and punchy?

I paid $80 for my ATH-AD500s and I like their sound.
The AD500s have a light feel on the head, so I can say they are the most comfortable headphones I've ever had.

Like a good idea too. Decisions decisions. Trying to get a feel for different headphones and such. Sorry for my wallet as they say around these parts. So fun though.

Or get the AD700s for the price of both with a little left over.

Agreed; I'd get the ATH-AD700 instead of getting both the AD500 and the SR60.
