Ok so a little more on it.
I feel the sound has sharpened. The bass especially; impacts seem much more pronounced, I'm really glad about that! I mentioned that the highs were somehow bright before and they have definitely toned down. When I play my most sibilant song I can bare it without too much issue (Not possible on my E7 nor the original HUD-MX1). Unfortunately that's as far as my memory recalls of the original HUD-MX1 so I won't be able to compare the two directly.
The HUD-MX2 pairs very well with both of my main headphones (Edition 8s and FXZ-200s). They seem well balanced, not flavouring the music too much, which helps as I bought the headphones based on the sound I wanted, not looking to 'correct them' with an amp. Power output seems excellent for my phones. It can play quietly without losing texture and also go beyond my normal listening levels with absolutely zero distortion. This speaks for both the line out and headphones out.
iPad connection works beautifully, with the MX2 producing much cleaner, accurate and fun sound than the iPad's Headphone out (this comes as no surprise..).
I think I mentioned this before but I really like the seamless transition when switching inputs/outputs. It immediately switches and quickly fades the volume in (so to not kill your ears if you're using different levels for the headphone output vs. line out). Very similar sounding through optical and usb. The only difference is optical is a fixed volume from the source whereas usb is influenced by the volume of the source (so it requires a little more work to pair properly, especially with IEMs).
Just a few words, any questions don't hesitate in asking.
