Audeze - Our Maxwell Gaming Headsets! (latest: Firmware v61 and HQ v97)

Had a pair of these delivered a few days ago and had a chance to try them last night. I haven’t been able to update the firmware just yet but the app suggests I’m only one behind the latest release.

I only have my Steam Deck with me so I plugged the dongle into there and tried Diablo IV. Really impressed with the quality of the sound, so much in the game that I didn’t realise was there! Very clear and the bass kicked in just nicely.

The only thing that is a bit odd is the volume. I have the Xbox version so I’m using the PC toggle on the dongle. It seems the volume steps are WAY out, at least on the Deck. I basically can’t hear anything until I get to around 50% volume, and then the volume seems to jump a lot between each successive click up. I was hoping for some finer control of the volume but maybe I’m missing something.

Music sounds … pretty good. I think I do prefer a v-shaped signature and I currently use PX8’s, which feel incredibly welcoming and really engage me with the music. The Maxwell’s sound super clear with music too, bass maybe a little lighter than I’d like (though using the Immersive EQ helps there), but they really lack that warmth that the PX8’s offer.

The vast majority of my usage will be for music so the PX8’s (at the moment) would win there, though it could just be a case of me adapting though I think I’d still always prefer that warmer feeling sound. But I also like gaming and having the option to use the dongle so easily on my consoles compared to having to use the aux port for the PX8’s puts the Maxwell’s ahead on that one.

I’ll update the firmware and see if it changes anything and give the Maxwell’s some more time.
Yeah I have the same thing when I use the dongle with the steam deck it seems like it acts like an exponential curve on the steam deck as it gets louder and louder in ever increasing steps from 70 -100%. The dongle works fine using my pixel or pc and it was the same on the previous as well as the latest firmware. Also seems to be limited to 24 bit 48khz on the steam deck but that seems to just be what the default software limit is for all devices as its the same for my usbc dacs.

Got the wicked cushions today. haven't gamed with them yet but put them on and listened to a bit of music. I currently have the entire leather strap off, for my big noggin'. But the extra thickness of the wicked cushions did not take away the comfort, I had enough headroom already, literally. There is also headroom with the volume too :)

Finally received my Maxwells and after about two weeks of using them I've determined that the Turtle Beach Stealth Pros are better at determining sounds around me than the Maxwells in warzone 2 and it's super disappointing because microphone on the Stealth Pros is crap compared to the Maxwells Microphone. I'm really hoping it's something that can be fixed with a firmware update. I'm continuing to use the Maxwells knowing that the Stealth Pros have better sound for my use case only because of the microphone.

I feel the same. I passed the Stealth Pro to my son when my Maxwells arrived but I really miss the sound from the Pros. Tbh if the Stealth Pro had been as comfortable as the Maxwell I think I’d have sent the Maxwell’s back and stayed with the SP

Someone posted a video in here where a guy goes over his EQ settings for different games for hearing nearby sounds the best, and set that up for Apex Legends. He also did Warzone and a couple of others. Nearby sounds are definitely more noticeable to me now.

The wicked cushions are definitely noticeably cooler than the stock, which weren't too hot to me but compared to the WC, are warm. I like the coolness. I adjusted the EQ slightly to compensate for the pads, based upon the same video I mentioned about posted about a guy who talks about the WC sound effect on the Maxwells, and then about FPS game specific EQ to hear your surroundings better.

My Maxwell just arrived and the first thing I noticed was this off center glue. I've not yet noticed any volume imbalance (knocks on wood). My pair came with the v1.0.1.35 firmware. I am not sure if its worth upgrading due to the stories I've read.

To my ears the sound quality difference coming from the Penrose X is massive!

I have a small complaint about the adjustable headband since the default middle wont fit my head, only 1 side can be adjusted if I adjust both sides I can no longer screw them in and my OCD is killing me.

I RMA'd mine for same thing (see my post further up this thread) just received replacement this morning which are fine - where are you located btw ?

I used a headband cushion thing from Amazon and a two thin layers of foam achieve the perfect fit as also couldn't accept having the headband in uneven holes.

I have a few days for a return window but I'll see how I feel about this

I am located in the Philippines.

Can you link me the cushions?
