Audeze LCD-4

Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here is a great album. I am glad the LCD-4 could do the album justice. The more I hear about the LCD-4 them more I want one. I hope you have a great night jamming out.

One of my favourite albums of all time!!! And yep, the LCD-4s are right there with it!

Next up, Atom Heart Mother.

I usually used either my SR-009s or HD800/HD800S headphones with Wish You Where Here (Pink Floyd) as it is a very expansive sounding recording, but damn, these new 200 ohm LCD-4s hold their own with the expansiveness that this album has to offer. Really enjoying what I'm hearing.

My setup is my Hugo TT as a DAC feeding my GS-X Mk2 using Tidal via USB FWIW.

Have you tried the 200 Ohm one with just your Hugo TT? Does it still drive them OK?
Which one do you like better at this stage, the 100 or 200 Ohm version?

I haven't...busy (real busy so far) weekend. But I shall early next week.

I will be updating my Headphone.Guru with a follow up between the two. Still need more listening time with the 200 ohm LCD-4s (but I'm a big fan of both).

I too love Wish You Were here,a great album and a great listen on a great system....it sounds absolutely incredible on my HEK's and fabulous on the 4's.....i listened to Harry Chapin's Taxi tonight on the 4's and i was amazed hearing details i hadnt heard and the impact of the music is quite remarkable.....the damn problem with this hobby is as soon as you think it can't get better it does ....but the truth is the differences between the top cans is really very subtle........i love both my HEK's and the 4's and there are moments when i think the 4's are better and then moments when I think the HEK's are better...oh well,problems...problems!

With the latest revision to 200Ohms, will the Mjolnir 2 still be able to drive the new LCD4 decently, or am I forced to go Rag?

The MJ2 will have no issues with them in terms of drive-ability. Just turn the volume knob up a bit more and you'll be set.

These are the official figures from the specs page at Schiit:

Maximum Power, 32 ohms: 8.0W RMS per channel

Maximum Power, 50 ohms: 5.0W RMS per channel

Maximum Power, 300 ohms: 850mW RMS per channel

Maximum Power, 600 ohms: 425mW RMS per channel

So if people quoted with the new LCD4 200mW@200 ohms /97 sensitivity produces 120db SPL, I guess that is more than enough (headroom inclusive)?

Question remaining is I don't know if it will be a good match since someone mentioned it was a bad combo but there were also praises before. Not sure if anyone owns the MJ2 and the new revised 4s

That should be ear-splitting plenty.

Here are some "fun with numbers" on the LCD-4s, to play them at 120dB (way, way more than you'd ever want to listen to), all you will need is roughly 200mW.

Here is a great link I like to use:

The reason I like to use that 120dB figure is mainly because of this post...

https://audeze.zendesk.com/entries/20866002-Selecting-an-amp-

It allows for occasional peaks upto 120dB, it's not the level you will actually be listening at.

Hi

Thank you for the link.

If the actual sensitivity of the LCD4 @ 200 Ohm is truely 97 dB / 1 mW, yes, an amplifier that delivers 200 mW into 200 Ohm suffices.

But if the actual sensitivity of  the LCD4 @ 200 Ohm is truely 7 dB lower than the official specifications, as Tyll was found for measurement of sensitivity of the LCD-X @20 Ohm (note: watch the measurements on Innerfidelity headphones LCD-X Audeze, in particularly that of sample 3), then it will be necessary that the amplifier delivers in fact 1000 mW into 200 Ohm  (and not 200 mW), which unfortunately is not able to do the King of Audeze (that delivers only 500 or eventually 600 mW into 200 Ohm).

Cordially.

PS: We will expect independent sensitivity measurements made by Tyll on Innerfidelity, to know the truth about the exact sensitivity of the LCD4 @ 200 Ohm.

There is no truth, there is just different results depending on how you measure. You have to compare apples with apples. You can't compare what Tyll does with what Audeze does and say one is right and the other wrong, especially when you don't know how they have been measured (Tyll doesn't say how he measures, it says "coming soon"). Saying Tyll got this and Audeze got that so there is a 7dB error for the LCDX and the LCD4 is therefore wrong, it doesn't work like that. Just stick with the Audeze specs only and compare those to each other.

Some reading...

(Audeze since changed from DRP to ERP I think.)

Don't worry so much, the Burson Soloist which one user on here has, drives them well. I am sure the King will be fine (or Audeze will look rather silly).

The Burson Soloist drives them nicely and as loud as I would ever listen, but I wouldn't go with a less powered amp. The King will provide more than enough power to the 4s.

The Audeze specs are:
LCD-X:  20 ohms impedance and 103 dB efficiency
LCD-4:  200 ohms impedance and 97 dB efficiency

Seems like quite a difference that could require different amplification.  Just an observation from the Audeze site.

Cheers,
RCB
