what is the potential of this headphone for fast music such as drum and bass, when combined with a powerful DAP like the D2 and a powerful headphone amp like the SR71. Is the bass light and muddy sound cured? or is the Denon AH-D7000 better and more neutral in this respect.

First of all, neither cans are good for portable use and will not be at their best with portable amps.

If bass impact is all you're looking for, then the D7000 is a no brainer. However, if you're looking to pick out bass line, then W5000's much better.

IMO, the W5000's much better technically speaking. It's more detailed, airy, better imaging, a lot more holographic soundstage, smoother treble, much faster bass with better texture and definition(but bass light). On the other hand, comfort wise, the D7000 is much better.

But even though I feel that its technically superior, the W5000 might not be your cup of tea at all since the D7000 is a much "funner" can. My best advice is this: if you're going to be rocking hard with your can, then go with the Denon. For other purposes such as Jazz, acoustics, classicals, go with the W5000.

Well amped, I think the W5000 would be pretty good for drum and bass. The W5000 is definitely a lot faster than a Denon IMO. The bass might be considered light but it's very tight and detailed.

All this depends on the W5000 being well-amped which I'm not sure your rig can do. Best to find a chance to audition them on your rig.

For bass and impact, go for the D7000. While W5000 for detail and speed. Do note that W5000 need to match with a good desktop amp(tube will be ideal) to drive it well or it'll sound bright and flat.

How come it's not a good match ?

I can tell you that the RSA HR-2 is NOT a good match for the W5000 at all.

The combo is very bright, sibilant, while having nasal mids(happens when W5000 is improperly amped or perhaps it's just W5000 being picky).

as long as the D7000 bass is not slow, i will go for these cans. i read on a hifi choice review that the bass can sometimes overwhelm, however it was minor. the better they are amped the more tight the bass on these denons? i heard they are mostly neutral while being fun. best to start with some all round cans. is the AH-D7000 treble rolled off too, which would be from the response curve?

The D7000's FR is V shaped meaning emphasis is placed on bass and treble or recessed mids though only slightly.

As for D7000's bass being slow, well, it's not that slow by itself. However, it's slow in contrast to the W5000.

W5000 is very picky on the amp, I have tried Little Dot V, IVSE, Gilmore Lite, Millett Hybrid, WA6 and few RSA portable. Only SR-71A, Gilmore Lite, and WA6 pair well. I would love to try Beta 22 and HA5000 but it is too rich for my blood now.

i have millett max right now and it isnt bad with my w5k. it also works fine unamped with a portable using a cheapo $1 1/4 to 1/8 inch adapter from frys. i liked it with my d2, but the cable was too long for practical protable use

I only have a iBasso D2 right now but I recently purchased W5000's. I'm guessing the OP is also asking about the ibasso amp? Is it enough to power the W5000's? Does it pair well or am I going to be hearing the bright, sibilant, nasal mids that someone mentioned when W5000's are improperly amped or paired? I have to travel a lot between school & home so I can't bring a full desktop amp with me.......

Hmm would setting the amp to Hi gain make a difference?
