what? order a pair of RS1's? but I already have a nice vintage pair with the wooden box so there's no need.

My W5000's fresh out of the box, but I have to agree it sounds quite similar to the W2002 - so far it also seems to share that special synergy with the HA2002. Ironically, at this point the W5000 "Raffinato" is less refined than the W2002, though I'll give it about 120 hours before I pass semi-final judgements (that's how long it took the L3000 to start blossoming IMO).

People who love the powerful L3000 bass would be wise not to sell them off for the W5000...they're not going to have that kind of bass even after burn in (unless Audio Technica sneaks in while I'm asleep and installs a mini subwoofer into each cup).

one of you with the HA2002 should go for the HA5000 and compare them for us.

my guess is that they are the same amp (only with different faceplates and finishes) so they'll sound exactly the same. what do you think?

I'm thinking you're probably right, since both headphones sound similar, both seem to like the HA2002 better than other amps (including my SDS), and the retail prices for both amps are basically the same.

Seems like the W5000/HA5000 is just the mass-produced (more like less-limited production) version of the W2002/HA2002. Wood differences could account for slight sonic differences in the headphones, but not in the amps. Wonder if a mass-produced version of the L3000 (sans leather) will ever appear...

Don't think I'm ready to go for an HA5000 yet, sorry

mmm... GRW19, I guess the reason I initially based my impressions comparing W5000 with W1000 and L3000 was because: both models are better known to the Head-fi circle than W2002, which there are fewer pairs circulating around. And I chose W1000 rather than W2002 was also because the non-limited production status of both W5000 and W1000.

IMHO, 'Raffinato' is a refined version of W1000, which replaces the W1000 on the product line rather than attempting to out-gunning the premium product range. i.e. W2002 and L3000.

It might not be as refined in sound compare with the W2002, but the difference in sound signature is definetly is refinement when side by side comparing with W1000.

Just some quick spec differences between the W2002 and W5000:

W2002/W5000
Frequency Response: 5-40,000Hz /5-45,000Hz
Sensitivity: 102dB/mW / 102db/mW
Impedance: 40 Ohms / 40 Ohms
Cable:Silver+Hi-OFC / 6N-OFC+Hi-OFC

Overlunge,

Thanks for the initial impression. I will check out the W5K in couple days at Muleling's. I will get my own pair on December 28 or so...so it is nice to know how does it sound first.

I know that this is a bit too early, but how would you rate the bass on the W2002 vs. W5000?

The W11JPN has been introduced in 1998 and was limited to 2000 pairs. Getting them is a major problem. As you know, even the pair overlunge listened to wasn't his.

Somehow, I see a Victor JVC HP-DX1000 in my future.
