Can anybody compare these to Mr. Speaker's Mad Dog (modded T50RP) headphones? The W1000X being around $150 more than the Mad Dog, they aren't exactly in the same price range; however, a comparison would be interesting.

I've only listened to the two headphones on separate occasions and not on the same equipment so take these opinions for what they are, opinions :p

The Mad Dog is a pretty neutral headphone, slightly better instrument separation and cleaner bass.  The W1000X has a more engaging midrange (or people would say it's peaky in the upper mids) especially for vocals but the resonance adds a bit of coloration that some people don't enjoy.  W1000X has a slightly wider soundstage, with a heavy and slightly slow bass response.  I've modded the W1000X to improve the speed of the bass a little

i feel that the w1000x's have better separation, but mad dogs have much much cleaner bass : /

anywho, how did you place your blue-tack? i found placing it on top of the acoustic silk lessened some of the resonance and gave a more closer presentation in my music.

Now I got my pair recabled with 8 wire cryo copper, and I got the L3000 pads too! I enjoy it even more now. Not sure about changes in sound. The pads really don' change the sound, but the cable might have tightened it up a bit. And I feel it has become a tiny bit brighter overall.

Librarian, where did you get them recabled at?

Has anyone else had their W1000X's recabled?  If so, where did you send them?

I absolutely love mine, but the cable bugs the $#!& out of me.  Plus I'd like to have the ability to use them with a balanced amp in the future.  I figured I could get the best of both worlds with a dual XLR recable and a HeadRoom XLR-to-1/4" adapter.

I'm looking at buying a ATH-W1000X, and would like to recable to 4 pin xlr to connect to a audio-gd phoenix.

Can a owner of a ATH-W1000X tell me if this has 4 cables inside the phone ?

I've lookd every where to confirm this, but could only find the ATH-W3000 edition that was confirmed to have 4 cables.

No, they smash down a bit when worn. They are perfect to my ears, they tame the highs a bit and increase the bass responce and sound stage. They do look thick in that particular photo. Here is a better one:

Those look nice.  And comfy.  Unfortunately it looks like www.jmoneyaudio.com doesn't exist.  At least for the time being.

Do the leather pads 'grip' your head better?  I still have the stock pads, and they seem to move around fairly easily as if my head were made of teflon.  My old AKG's never did that.

Anyone here also familiar with the Grado SR80 or similar? Just wondering how similar they sound to the W1000X. The frequency response posted on golden ears look similar though other things, especially the CSD graph is different. The SR80 looks painful around 4.5KHz... Anyway, just curious about how they compare as I have never heard any Grado headphones.

I can't speak for the SR80 specifically, but I did move from the SR325is to the W1000X.

For me the W1000X wins hands down.  The SR325is was no slouch, but it didn't have enough bass for my tastes.  The W1000X, to me at least, has just the right amount of bass, treble, clarity, etc.  It's the middle of the road.

I was feeding them both with a Schiit Asgard and a Woo WA6.  Mostly vinyl, but occasionally with an iPod & DAC.

Hope this helps.

I have the RS-1 (and have owned or demo'd most modern Grado headphones) and the W1000X; they sound quite different (and not just tonally). The ATs have a bigger soundstage, hotter upper mids (and more forward and wetter mids in general), somewhat "nasal" or "twangy" coloration, more bass impact, and less treble impact. They're also a bit slower. Personally I think the RS-1 are slightly better, but the W1000X isolate (which by itself is a "big deal" in comparison); both are very good. :) As usual, I would never suggest using graphs as predictive crystal balls.

Hey guys I just pulled the trigger on these since I love my AD700 and ESW9 so much.  I don't know if this is possible but can anyone recommend a resistor adapter or something that I can use to increase the impedance on these so I can use them with the Lyr and not get a lot of background noise?
