I am using a pair of ATH-M50's right now and really have enjoyed them.

I'm looking at something better. I have a budget of $250 for a pair and an amp. Audio source is a Creative X-Fi sound blaster.

If I do step up it appears that I'm most likely going to need an amp.

My music choices vary but been mainly Trance.

Would like a Closed back set.

Ultrasone PRO 750 would benefit you well. Are you looking for a desktop amp or a portable amp? I suggest the E11 if going portable, well actually, the E11 will do you just fine at the desk too. Otherwise you'll go way over budget, unless you find a really good deal on something else. Sorry for going a little over budget anyways. The 750 don't need amplification but will benefit from it. See how you like the sound first, then maybe buy an amp later when you have more money if you think you can get more out of the 750's

Denon d2k is a fantastic upgrade path from the m50. You can get them from electronic expo for $210 shipped.

+1, if you want open you could also look at the Beyerdynamic DT990 (you could get the 32 ohm if you dont have an amp). They dont have the sub-bass impact of the denon's but still they have nice bass

The DT880 is a good jump from the M50...   don't be tempted to go the 600 ohm route with the DT880 unless you plan on getting a amp with some power....

I would advise for you to audition the Ultrasone before you buy it. There are many people who love the Ultrasones but many people also find their upper mids and treble to be too harsh. If you can live with the harshness, they are very good headphones, but please be aware of their sound before you buy them. I once made the mistake of buying a PRO900 before hearing them and while I did like certain things about them (the bass), I found them extremely fatiguing in the long run and had to sell them.
