The M50 is really the only portable headphones of the 4 you are considering. And so assuming you want portable headphones to use with your ipod, you should choose the M50. FWIR, it does not require an amp to sound good, but it does sound better when amped (and after burn-in).

x2 on the M50 IF, and ONLY IF, your using it with your iPod solely
If you plan on upgrading your rig (amp, separate DAC, etc.), then IMO the D2000s would be your best bet

Why not consider the M-Audio Q40 as well?
Their sensitivity is rather high, so I think they will be doing well with a I-Pod.
The Beyers and Denon are no good without a decent amp.
And the D2000 has no isolation to speak of.

well just cuz someone says they use it with an ipod doesn't necessarily mean its gonna be portable.
Transportable wise, yes D2000 would be the best bet.
If you are walking from place to place, being in buses, and stuff then no the d2000 would not be the way.

I have yet to try my D2000's with a portable device, but seeing how well my sound card powers them, I think you should be just fine!! Just keep the volume %100 at all times

Also if you do the Denon's you can upgrade with an amp at home in the future

Hell I don't care if they are too big to be "portable" or not, i'd still sport my D2K's everywhere ^_^

Assuming use with portable amps:

the d2000 + no-amp or cheap-amp for decent sound
any dt770 + no-amp or cheap-amp for lame sound
the dt770 80ohm + good-amp for wonderful sound and better isolation
the dt770 250ohm + a great -amp for superb sound and better isolation
the d2000 + good or great amp for decent sound

Stationary use:

the dt770 600ohm + a great tube-amp for reference closed back sound

Sounds like someones obviously a Beyerdynamic lover.

I never tried the Dt770 model myself, Anyone ELSE have any opinions how they compare to the D2K's? They seem to be the same price range and similar build. Though I did note the Dt770's Impedance is much higher.

My ATH-M50 sounded great out of my ipod. A little too large to be considered truly portable, but it could be done, unlike say the D2000.

Compared to the DT770 2005 consumer edition (250 ohm), the D2000 has a richer sound. The DT770 is dryer, more analytical.
Both have good comfort, detail retrieval and soundstage.
DT770 has more PRaT, D2000 can be dull and boring.
Bass of the DT770 is faster, tighter, punchier. D2000 bass is untextured and slow.
Mids of the DT770 are IMO better, because not recessed. D2000 mids can be recessed, especially notable on vocals.
DT770 isolates much better, D2000 hardly isolates.
Both have problems with treble. Highs can be harsh, piercing and sibilant.

The highs in the dt770 are a matter of amp matching, they sound more balanced under pure class A and almost perfect with tube amplification, also the 250ohm version with the iqube portable amp does justice to the highs.

The dt770 is a better headphone if you are willing to invest a bit in amplification, otherwise just get the d2000
