For my 20-GB harddisk player:
mostly LAME --preset extreme

For my 1-GB flash player:
LAME --preset medium or VBR (96-320 kb/s) Q 4-6 with around 150 kb/s average

Music: preset standard in LAME 3.95 or .96 . If AAC then either 128 or 190kbps. I don't use ALAC because for much of my music the bitrate doesn't differ very much from straight wav/aiff. So I'd use wav/aiff for storage and perhaps 256/320 for highest quality on the iPod.

Internet radio: abr in LAME anywhere from 75 - 110 kbps (I can hear a difference even if the original stream isn't exactly high quality). I prefer 44.1kHz over 32.1 even if the original doesn't seem to have any sound at those high frequencies (call me miseducated). On an iPod I also use AAC 64 or 80kbps - I really like AAC 64.

I use 3.96.1 these days. I have yet to have any issues with at.

Is 232 a mistake, or are you using something else besides iTunes to encode?

For my PC where storage is plentiful I use OGG at q10
For my DAP where storage isn't so plentiful I use OGG at q7
