Astell & Kern SE100: A&futura Impressions - Reviews

How's the USB DAC functionality? Any sync or lag issues?

I’d like to know this too - any SE100 owners with a Windows 10 PC? Is there lag on the USB-DAC function?

It really saddens me to say that but I’m really starting not to like my Futura as the gapless function doesn’t work properly. Gapless is a absolute must for me as I have many albums which are made as one consecutive song and the non functional gapless completely destroys my listening experience. It’s really unpredictable, sometimes it works but many times, with the same songs, there is a clear silent gap or audible crack. This drives me mad.

I’ve pointed out that issue several times here but with no response from AK. Please AK, do some testing and fix this extremely annoying issue. Don’t make me sell my Futura. Gapless did work 100% flawlessly with my previous AK300 and honestly, having issue such as this was the last thing I expected when buying Futura :frowning2:

What happened with this, does the SE100 do gapless properly on FLAC files?

The gapless issue referred to above was with ALAC files. There are no issues with FLAC files.

@Cherubian I sent you a follow-up PM. Have you had a chance to test the ALAC files after the new firmware update that was released last week?

Great info that the Samsung Evo 512GB works well. Can you tell me the total GB available that the SE100 shows for storage for it in "Folder?"
Thanks
It looks like this :)

I think it is an issue with FLAC as well, I still experience it listening to FLAC exclusively...
Even with the latest update? I knew about a possible issue with ALAC. I will pass this on to our dev team also. Is it consistent or every one in a while with FLAC? I tried a number of FLAC and DSD files on the SP1000M and didn't have an issue with gapless with either formats. I will test some more tracks.

Hi Jason,

I use the latest FW version. It is an interesting issue, I tried the followings:
1. Switch on SE100
2. Played some gapless FLAC tracks >>> NO gapless feature between tracks
3. Go back to the first track and play again >>> The gapless feature works like a charm.
4. Switch off/on SE100
5. Played the same gapless FLAC tracks >>> NO gapless feature between tracks
6. Go back to the first track and play again >>> The gapless feature works like a charm.

So looks like after switching on the SE100 the gapless doesn't work at the first time, then replaying the material brings in the feature. Caching issue?
I will try to find more gapless stuff in my inventory.

Cheers

Thank you for the additional info. This is very helpful. I will try and get an answer in the next day or two for everyone.

Thank you! Will be great to have it flawless. :)

Maybe it is related, after switching on the SE100 and start to play the first track after ~5 secs (any track, not just gapless) there is an icon showing up for 1 sec on the status bar next to the battery indicator, looks like a B letter and the playback skips 1 sec during seeing the icon. It occurs after every switch on for the first playback.

Cheers!

Would you guys rather get a Sony WM1A for 899 bucks used or a new Astell Kern SE100 for 1799 $? The SE100 is in the green MChat design. Dont really mind and is limited edition, is a unique design though :D
Is the additional 1000 bucks worth it or are we talking about diminishing returns here?
Edit or A&K SR15 for 759 bucks used?
Thank you in advance!
