I remember reading the instruction just using apkpure as an example, in fact any website that has downloadable apks would work and there are a few popular ones. Even apkpure.com only stopped supplying some of the apps, not all of them, Spotify for example doesn't have apk available for download and that might be publisher's choice. I went off and got the Spotify app from a different site.
Would there be any issues from your experience with connecting the kc to wifi be it at home or by using my iPhone as a hotspot? (I can’t remember all the stuff I’ve read on this thread but I’m glad I’ve been able to find all this info re bluetooth so i have a good understanding of what does work and what doesn’t - I don’t have that much more hair to pull out nowadays )
There should be no problem connecting your Kann Cube to your home wifi or through your iPhone hotspot. I do this almost every day without any issues.
There is a small trick to know about when connecting to a public wifi connection (or any wifi connection) that requires you to enter a password or click a box that you “agree” to their usage rules.
If you recall when you insert an SD card, you can swipe downwards from the top of the screen to monitor the scanning for new music on the SD card.
When the Kann Cube detects that login credentials are needed before the wifi connection will be enabled, it will display this on-screen. Quickly swipe from the top of the screen downwards and you will see an option to supply needed credentials (sorry, I don’t remember the exact text). Click on that button and the Kann Cube opens a web page and allows you to type in any needed credentials using a virtual keyboard.
At this point you should be successfully connected to wifi and do streaming, system updates, etc.
I have found the Kann Cube to be very well behaved and reliable in this respect. It’s a wonderful feature!

I don't have an iPhone but I believe the trick will be in how the iPhone routes your local WLAN traffic. A "private" network should route everything that is on your local WLAN and connected to your iPhone. My little experience with hotspots is that they are good enough for web browsing but not powerful enough to route a continuous stream of HD audio or video. For example, mp3 might route but 24bit 96khz might not.
Less speculation: my 2.4ghz router (dedicated wireless router, not a hotspot) has occasional glitches if I play 24bit 96khz and will usually fail with 24bit 192khz or DSD. My 5.8ghz plays 24bit 192khz and DSD without difficulty. 2.4ghz with my laptop, PC, phone, or Kann Cube is insufficient for extreme HD music streaming.

My biggest concern is the integrity of the APKs. I would much rather just download them from the Google Play store, so it's a little irritating to me that A&K don't just supply the store. I don't want to download some malware ridden APK from some weird site.

I suspect the problem you're experiencing here is that your 2.4G network is congested with a ton of other devices, while your 5G network is relatively unburdened. You'll get better range with 2.4G but faster throughput with the 5G, but I would expect that either should be able to handle a single DSD stream without issues (assume both bands were equally uncongested).

You're right. It does have other APKs available for downloading. I just tried Spotify first, and it wasn't available. It has Qobuz, and I downloaded that just fine. The only other one I would really want is Spotify, but I don't really NEED Spotify. It had the ROON APK available, but unfortunately the KC won't recognize it. Too bad. Would be nice to use the KC as a ROON target.
If you're going to be saving music on a card anyway, I would just use a card reader. Macs are pretty good about not needing drivers for file transfer type activities, though. I haven't seen anything that says you need a driver for this.
I am also trying to figure out how to get APKs onto the KC. The instructions are out of date, and it's unclear how to get APKs.
I would suggest erasing the SD card using the KC. Under “Settings”, click on “System Information”, scroll down to “SD card” and click on “Erase SD card”.
There might be a way to choose where downloaded music is saved. Click on “Settings”, “Downloads”. There is an option for “Selected Folder”. Sorry, I can’t help more on this one, I don’t do streaming.
Okay, I have got many of these processes figured out now. I have qobuz, spotify, and Amazon HD music streaming all downloaded and installed on the cube, and I am currently transferring the music files on My Synology NAS DS 416play., to a Sandisk ultra 400gb card that i have installed in the KC. None of these processes has been too complicated. once I figured out what I ought to do.

The Amazon music app is still not able to play the ultra HD music. The ultra hd tracks are 24bit 192 Khz but the device capability (of kann cube) is detected as 24bit 44.1 khz and currently playing at is shown as 16bit 44.1khz. Any ideas when it will be fixed? It has been quite some time. I am using the latest apk for amazon music app. The firmware is 1.16CM.
However if I use Kann cube in external dac mode and use the desktop Amazon music app then I am able to play at 24bit 192khz.

I'm sure A&K needs to protect their product by controlling what can be installed and what cannot but I wish we could install more apks, maybe even the entire Play store, on the KC. When the day is done, I try to be happy with what I have and not worry about the rest. Streaming from a phone with the aptx HD codec might be helpful for some.
I had a few replies about people being more successful with 2.4ghz WiFi than what I summarized. I forgot that I have a stovepipe near my router. I bet that if I moved my router, I would get better performance out of 2.4ghz. Sorry about that.
