As enjoyable/good as Grado's, but better quality

SR125i or SR225i are good choices whereas the SR325is is a more controversial phone.

Can you sum up the issues for a newbie like myself?

I ask since it is on my short list. Thanks.

Lots of people think that the 325(i(s)) is a sidestep at best from the 225(i). And that the highs are excessively bright. Search for the 325 in the forums...I'm sure there're plenty of threads.

325 has very harsh, and unnatural high while 225 has at least controllable (but still very harsh)

For me, only listenable Grados are HP1000, MS-2i and RS-1 (RS-1 is almost barely tolerable, still high is too much but not as much as lower end cans.)

Since HP1000 are expensive and uncomfortable (with original HP-1/2 SRx00 frame) I strongly recommend MS-2i...

I thought they flattened out the midrange hump on the 325is when they did the upgrade?

There are of course those who prefer the 325i to the 225.

If you found the highs of your 80 to be on the limit of what you could handle, the 225 would be a safer choice. If you felt like having even more attack and aggression than what the 80 could give you the 325i could be the can for you.

Not only highs are more pronounced on the 325, bass too, more body, more punch.
