Articulate, well-defined phones with a kick

DT880 is not too good on bass (to me) so drums will lose some power.
Also, they NEED an amp to work properly.

Try Ultrasone. Or Grado.

For the money, the Sony V6 is not bad, either.

Hey, I'm just wondering if there's an inexpensive pair of phones that can handle "wll o noise" type music well, i.e. it can keep several different instruments distinct. It would also be nice if the drums had a little kick to them...just an overall fun and articulate pair of cans.

Snag a pair of used D2000. I'd never literally "felt" kick drums over a set of headphones before, until the Denon! : ) Ain't that a "kick in the head"!

Yup, D2000 (how did I know Burdman would be here, suggesting these? You beat me to the punch, buddy, lol). Articulate, fun, punchy, comfy, rockin' cans.

The DT880 isn't for you in my opinion. Fast and articulate, detailed, bassy, but yes, they NEED good amping to bring out all those characteristics. If you're into vocals in your music, they kind of seem to sit back in the mix a bit. They are pretty analytical phone, too, and not the most "fun"...almost like a reference monitor feel to them. Go Denon. If you don't want to spend that much, the D1000 is a good compromise between performance and value.
