Hey, I'm just wondering if there's an inexpensive pair of phones that can handle "wll o noise" type music well, i.e. it can keep several different instruments distinct. It would also be nice if the drums had a little kick to them...just an overall fun and articulate pair of cans.

If you're looking for good soundstage and drum kick I'd look at the Ultrasone HFI 580s. S-logic helps keep stuff separated pretty well, and they're designed with drummers in mind.

Well, I mean, I don't need the drums to be too emphasized. I just... I dunno, I have some ES7's, and the drums sound pretty flat. Like, my e2c's just seem to have a lot more kick to them.

I dunno, the 990's seem pretty good. The 880's got a perfect review on headphone.com, and I would assume these would be better. And it seems like $170 is a pretty good price for them... Of course, closed would be better, but I hear they actually isolate a little. I dunno. Thoughts?

I don't think the DT880 isolates very well at all from what I've heard. Also, if you can get the DT800 for $170 it really shows how much we get ripped off in the UK... often I see the DT880 for £170! I'm sure low prices are around £150 if I bother to look, but that's not much of an improvement still. Anyway, the DT880 will require some amplification that your regular portable or PC won't really give, so you're looking more ontop of that. Same with the DT990.

Unamped? DT770. But only the 80 ohm version, not the 250.

RP21 if you want to keep it under $100. Very good instrument separation and pretty deep bass. The only problem is that it is a little analytical sounding.

I also had good experience with the Ultrasones HFI-series for instrument separation and good bass kick, though never listened to their newer models. HFI-780 is getting good reviews so you might want to consider it.

Yes, the HFI-780 are a very good alternative and with very good instrument separation and good bass; and really doesn't need an amp (sound excellent without one, only improves a little with one).

For instrument separation, the Ultrasone HFI 700 are pretty good. You may be able to pick them up for a reasonable price. They've been out for a while now.

(Might get shot for this): Sony V6 if you want a really good kick. Those aren't the most detailed or good-sounding phones, though. A little harsh to my ears.

AKG headphones in general manage good separation but I find most of them bassless and boring.

Personally, of course, I recommend Grados. They're very fast, very articulate, have great, punchy bass, and as long as you avoid the bottom of the line, have fine instrument separation.
