Are these really IEMs?

some would refer to them as canalphones. But no, they are not just earbuds.

Exact how I differ them as well.
...meaning that these are IEM's. Even if they don't go as deep into the ear canal an most other IEM's.

I would.

It is hard to say 'canalphone' these day as everyone is calling every 'phone that goes into the ear canal an IEM. Well, if mp3 can be both the music and the music player at the same time, I guess we shouldn't be too hung up by what things are called, or what they actually are

I always thought the distinction between canalphones and IEM was useful, because canalphones you really don't have to fiddle that much to get them in your ear (at least for me), while IEM often require a little bit more work (e.g., squishing foamies, doing the two handed "pull ear while inserting" technique).

Also the honest truth is that I have yet to find a canalphone that really matches the quality of even the cheaper IEM, much less the good stuff. But canalphones are useful (and are great gifts) and do sound good for the average joe who just wants something cheap for his iPod...

Best,

-Jason
