Are there are any DACs with APIs or programmable interfaces?

All ESS and AKM DACs offer controls via registers, which can control functions and characteristics of the DAC's sound. Just wondering, are there any affordable DACs that offer an interface for end-users to adjust these settings? Or even something simple like a UART interface to connect with via FTDI? As I get deeper into the audiophile (or audiofool) space I want to twiddle every knob to understand how these devices work. Hoping someone can point me in the right direction!

The USB Blaster v2 would be a good start if you really want to get into it. There's DACs that use it for flashing. It might take searching for open source DAC firmware for a model you could make edits to.

Hadn't thought of using an evaluation board -- that's a pretty cool idea. Would be a lot of work to get up and running into a usable system, but it's still pretty neat. I might try looking deeper into the Hifiberry stuff. They have a DSP add-on that might be more up my speed in terms of EQ'ing and filtering the sound, opposed to just messing around with DAC registers.
