I happen to think the star of the HPA8 is the DAC (the amp is about 700mw @30ohm). The chord hugo gets a lot of love for it's DAC as well.

What exactly are you looking for out of the HP-A8? I owned one for a long time and liked it very much, but recently switched to the Sony HAP-S1 and LOVE it.
