so i've ripped a CD (The Cure - Pornography) on the latest iTunes (4.9) on my home comp, and also dragged and dropped another music folder (Kraftwerk - Minimum Maximum) to iTunes to add to the library, downloaded it to my Shuffle, and listened to the albums while going to work.

i get to my work comp, wanting to listen to both albums, and figured i'd transfer the tracks to my work comp's hard drive by going in to the Shuffle's iPod_Control/Music/F00 or F01 etc... and noticed that the latest iTunes renames all the mp3 files with four letter words. for example: HTXL, WELG, BIHG, etc...

i can understand maybe it's The Cure's Pornography tracks that are named like that because i used iTunes to rip it, but i ripped my Kraftwerk's Minimum Maximum on another comp with proper file names, like "01 Kraftwerk - Radioactivity.mp3" but it seems like iTunes renamed all my files with incoherent four letter words as well.

this is clearly to stop people transferring music from one comp to another by using an iPod, but it sucks nevertheless. this is MY music and stored on MY computer, and i don't want iTunes renaming my files. this totally sucks!

I noticed this as well. I wondered if it was just me or that was the way it always worked. Before this point I wasn't keeping everything out of itunes.

nah... it was definitely not like this before on previous versions of iTunes. i've transferred mp3s through my iPod's Music folder from home to work many times, and i've only noticed this when i upgraded to 4.9 a week ago.

the iPod's have always stored the music in unorganized random folders, which is one of the things I hate most about that player, but not sure about the filenames

ilounge.com does have a guide on how to transfer music from a ipod to another PC in their iPod 201 section
